This thread prompted by @grayhawk's evaluation thread.

How do you handle this situation:

R2, batter singles. R2 comes around to score, the throw is cut off (no play at the plate). F2 is standing in the plate area, slightly in the runner's path. R2 runs near him, lifts his "chicken wing," and his elbow nicks F2 in the shoulder. The contact is so mild that F2 is not moved off his spot. The contact is not nothing, and it's not MC.

(I say it's not MC because, IMO, the contact in the play I want to discuss doesn't remotely rise to the level of MC. If you want to make the case that this is MC, however, feel free to do so.)

At less-than-mens league levels, tell the player to knock it off.  Get the coach involved if you need to.

At mens league and pro, leave it alone and let them police it.  Maybe if the catcher says something tell him to address it correctly and only to the level of the crime.

Depends on level of play.

LL/Rec level ball I am probably saying something to a coach about it (but not making a big deal about it) to the effect that I saw it and it needs to stop.

Above that I have nothing and if F2 were to mention it to me I may advise him to stay out of the runner's way when there is no play.

Umpire bumper sticker:

  • “Nip it.  Nip it in the bud†noumpere

BUT we always taught our kids to make obvious contact to any defender that was clearly in the basepath without the ball, not hard BUT a touch to get an obstruction call.

It does depend on the level of play, but I can see an EJ or a warning.  For me it is also a had to be there...I had a freshmen R1 trying to steal 2B.  Out by 20 feet easy, takes a swipe at F6 glove.  I EJ him.  Varsity coach was watching the game and came over to me to plead the kids case.  I told him that R1 should't be contacting the defense.  I never did the paperwork, so it was more like a restriction.

Why did you EJ him? and why did you then not do the paperwork?

I ejected him because at the moment, I considered it USC, more than MC.  After I spoke with the varsity coach, I thought I might have been a little severe.  So by not doing the paperwork, there would be no formal punishment.  It was a HTBT, and it is possible I over-reacted.  I might do the same thing again if it were to happen again.

I'd respectfully suggest this is a horrifically bad idea.  Either eject or don't -- but if you eject, follow through.  When you don't, you encourage the coach to beg the next ump to toss one of his players to not submit the paperwork.  I'd bet dollars to donuts your assignor would blow a gasket knowing you were doing this.

Yeah...this was a few years ago. Lesson learned.

Assigner has nothing to do with ejects around here, but interpreter does. But I know what your saying.

A knock it off usually works, but a warning on MC? There is no such thing for MC - it either happens and gets an ejection or 'didn't' and gets a knock it off.

I see the chicken wing as MC

I see the chicken wing with Blue Cheese dressing and celery.

And I keep seeing BigUmpire dressed in a spiderman costume. I am cursed for life and no amount of psychiatric care will help. Oh well, there's always budweiser to go a long with the chicken wings.

That picture is actually another member on this forum.

Guess who it is?

Now the FU monkey MAY be me.

Isn't "knock it off" a warning?

The best and understood by all who have been in this game for more that 2 years.

Something doesn't have to be MC for an EJ.

Something shouldn't have to escalate to the point of MC.

I'm not saying I'd necessarily EJ for the chicken wing, but depending on the situation, I might EJ.
