Has anyone on U-E built there own AR-15?

 

Just started Building one myself. Piece by piece.

I priced it out before I bought mine.  

 

I didn't come out ahead.  So I bought the Bushmaster that I wanted.

 

I hope you're able to come out ahead.

 

Or are you just doing it so you get the exact specs that you want?

I have fired AR-15's, M-16's M-14's. etc. I know how to operate them but I want to learn more about them. So I figured if I build one piece by piece and learn exactly what each part does as I build one then I willlearn.

Building your own allows you to choose key parts that are offered by manufacturers' that are well above the standards level, giving you a fine firearm. You may pay a little more for it in the end, but you know you have a firearm that works with percision. One company I can recommend if you want to purchase a ready unit is Legion Firearms here in Texas. No non-sense AR-15's that are works of art.

Are you tied to the AR-15 family? If so, I'd seek to use a piston instead of the direct impingement system.

OK, what questions do you have?  I have built 3, butchered the first, built with Brownells parts. 2nd one I used all top of the line, best lower, hight quality parts, was expensive, but shot dimes at 150 and 200 yards. Last one was adding as many rails as I could and really pimped it out, green dot, flashlight, 3/4 sights. All the whistles and weight.  More like an M-4 style.

 

Hammered forged barrels suck, go with match barrels.

BUT building one WILL get you more in touch with the weapon.

 

I have a class 3 FFL.

Mine sound different when I fire them.

 

You want REAL defense weapon, Get an AK.

Invest in the right tools, it will make your life much easier.

Also consider your purpose when building one. Since you're wanting to learn the ins and outs, building a basic cheap plinking model is a good way to go.

This one is going to be a 5.56/2.23 Most of the lower assembly parts are in. I'm on Furlough so I will start building this week. Now I need to save up for upper assembly parts.

I shot trap this morning. Went 24 of 25 from 16 and 23 of 25 from 20 handicapped.  Using a rental shotgun, I was very happy.  Windy here in Kalifornia. @JaxRolo Hope you post some pictures along the way.  I am sure it will be a illegal build here in the peoples republic of Kali.

I saw something online about buying a lower that is partly machined and doing the work to finish it on a drill press (the place making them even had classes in their shop where you could do it under supervision). The end game was that if you did a certain percentage (I want to say 20%) of the work yourself it would be considered "home made" and would not need to be registered. Anybody have any idea if this is true?

There isn't any registration in Florida for long arms so that is a moot point (and for those requiring registration, it would probably be illegal not to). There would be no transfer required from an FFL because the 80% receiver is not considered a firearm.

The law allows one to manufacture a firearm for personal use but it gets sticky if you were to sell it as far as I know.

Since the cost of lower receivers has come back to earth, I wouldn't bother with this route unless you really wanted to tinker.

Never built an AR specifically before but I have shot them all my life and have owned a few of them and mixed and matched parts but that's about it. I've built a Rem 700 before but from a building prospective those are two completely different things. They are like Fenway and the new Yankee stadium. Both stadiums are awesome and fun to go to but offer a completely different experience.

Interesting,I am not a gun expert but I had never heard of a AK 74. Learn something new.

@mstaylor  In 1978, the Soviet Union began replacing their AK-47 and AKM rifles with a newer design, the AK-74.
