I suppose it would not be completely unreasonable to rule that he did start an attempt to go to 2nd. There was movement consistent with what could have been an attempt. But that's going to be pretty hard to (a) spot and (b) be sure of, particularly given where other runners might be and how large a crew you're on, you might have to rule on the ball going out of play. I know PU would have that in this case with no other runners, but you still need to be aware of the ball. I think there's just enough for the call to be "correct", but I don't think I'd be aware enough or certain enough to give it out myself. I also think that at the level I call games and the quality of grounds I call on, that could just as easily be a stumble from uneven ground or just losing balance from running one way and looking another.

that is absolutely terrible!!!  there is no way in the world there is an attempt anywhere there!! :shakehead:  terrible!

Yes. Angel called him out.

So, he called him out, so it's right?

Yes. Angel called him out.

He could call him an ostrich, that doesn't make him one. Not even close to a turn for me. Angel might be a great guy and do a million things right, but this is how he gets the rep he has.

I don't agree with the call but just because it's Angel there is no need for a beheading.

No one is beheading Angel ....

It doesn't matter who called this,..... it's horrible

I don't see it, but what I did see was Angel keeping his eye on the runner even as he passed the bag.

Agree with this.  Way too many watch the fielder or look for the ball or heck just start heading to B (2 person of course).

I don't have a move to second but it wouldn't take much more to be one at that level.  Make it be even more than that in the local fall Tball games though.

I'd have to guess that they've had instructions about calling this more aggressively. We've seen it several times this season, and not all by Angel. :)

Yeah, the ones I have in mind have been really tight, and I'd never call them in my games. At least 3 that I can recall.

you'll have to show me to prove it ....because I can't recall this being called on someone who doesn't make a single flinch to first like this one here...........

Ummm....no.. not out.  How can you consider that an attempt to go to second?

Posted

Angel motions to the coach as to say he turned his shoulders. I don't see a shoulder turn at all.

Posted

Is it considered an attempt to advance if the runner turns to look at second base?

Sometimes I get caught spending too much time staring at second base and get my face slapped.

But I don't think that's what you meant. ;)
