I have always said that on a tag attempt you have to show a safe signal. Just missing the base, do nothing, once there is a play it requires a call.

I could have sworn that the mechanic for a play at the plate w/ no tag is nothing ....yes?

The usual mechanic at HP, as you say, is no signal: no tag, no touch, no signal.

I think the runner SO clearly missed HP, that Marquez was simply announcing "no tag," so that both players could respond accordingly. They did, and it worked.

Let's call it an advanced mechanic. :)

But what if the runner thinks he touched the plate (or is not totally sure), and he sees the safe signal from the umpire, then based on that does not attempt to go touch the plate and F2 comes back to tag him and the ump calls him out?  Wouldn't the runner have a case to argue it?  Is it not still better to signal nothing, this was everyone knows there was no tag and no touch of the plate?

First just because they did it in MLB doesn't make it right.  For all we know they got back to the locker room and had a discussion about how they kicked that mechanic.

Secondly you can signal if the original tag is a ways from the plate and this one was right at the edge of the dirt circle.  Is that a ways from the plate?  maybe.

so theres no one right or wrong mechanic here and you cant tell for sure anyway.

This is what I had. I think he nailed the mechanic.

If he is not totally sure, go touch the damn plate who cares what the umpire signaled.  In this case I think it was done properly.

I've seen runners inadvertently convince amateur umpires they missed the plate by going back to retouch.

I agree the attempt has to be away from the plate but if there is a clear attempt like this you should show a signal, and announce there was no tag! That way the runner and the defense knows there has been no call on the touch of the plate. If the attempt is right at the plate, most times the retouch or retag is going to be almost immediate so just use one signal.
