Had a play Monday. I'm BU, R1,R3, I'm in B. R1 stealing on the pitch. F2 throwing down. I take my step back, keeping my chest on F2 watching for a throw to 2nd or 3rd. F2 fires toward 2nd. As I start turning with the ball, I see F4 cutting inside to cut off the throw as R3 takes off for home. Luckily I was on the ball, anticipated this play and was able to avoid F4 and his throw home which nailed R3.

It got me thinking though. What if BU gets in the way or bumps F4...impeding the throw and the imminent play at the plate? Umpire interference seems to only mention PU impeding on F2's throw to retire a runner.

Is this a case where you would just find a rock to crawl under and the play stands, or is there any interpretation that would send R3 back to 3rd?

RichVee,

That would NOT be Umpire Interference.

Tough break for the defense, a bit of embarrassment for the BU, live ball, play the bounce.

Umpire INT by the BU can occur only on a batted ball, and only when the batted ball, not a fielder, contacts him while inside. No exceptions. maven

That's what I thought. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Thanks

I adopted that position (in 2 and 3 man NCAA LH batter excepted) because before I was ignorant (me and some umps at a higher level than me) and because it's a great look at most steals at 2B. But, I have had an F4 catch the ball next to me while I was back pedaling to the perfect look at the swipe tag at the steal of 2B. If the throw is on line you won't be in the way, if not it's on them. But it is a great experience to pivot with the ball and have an F4 clear you by a millimeter catch the ball and nail R3.

Gotta admit. It was a good feeling to "sense" F4 cutting in and being ready to see him there during my pivot.

There are TWO and only TWO types of Umpire Interference in OBR.

1. umpire is hit with a batted ball before contacting a fielder or passing a fringe fielder.

2. PU interferes with F2's throw to prevent a steal, execute a pick-off, or return the ball to the pitcher.

NFHS adds that when a pitch is lodged in the umpire's equipment that they call it Umpire Interference which is just . . . sigh.

Anything else is play on.

If runners on the corners I am staying in the C position.

Fed wants you in B.

Everyone wants you in B

Thanks HeadHunter, I knew FED for sure, didn't want to speak for other sources.

They do but if this same play happens my take on it would be the runner sliding back into 3rd and then your going to have a banger at 3rd and your going to be more on top of the call than you would be from B

Not true.  Some have the philosophy of being close to the lead runner so you are in C whenever a runner is at second or third.

And, FWIW, this was the standard when I was first learning.

No... it is true. All manuals argee. You should be in B.

Also think about this. 95% of plays happen at first. Why would you want to be further from the majority of plays?

Because you have more time to move for a play at first.  So its not just a matter of where the play is going to be, its the timing involved and the importance of the call etc that also enter into it.

I agree with you that B is better in this situation.  I just disagree that "everyone wants it" and if Im working for someone who wants me in C then I'll be in C.

When I was in Arizona we were in "C" whenever a runner was beyond first base.  I'll admit I didn't umpire much if any baseball there for the past 5 years.  But when I came to Missouri a two years ago, everyone here and in Illinois is in "C" ONLY with a runner on third or second and third.

Our state association put out a mechanic book several years ago that has the BU in "C". I prefer B.

OK, I will adjust my statement to mean all major mechanics books, PBUC,NCAA, FED. State or local mechanics manuals don't count.
