Too bad they ended the clip where they did. I believe an announcer was about to actually say something useful/truthful about umpiring. We rely on our hearing to make good calls. When we can't hear the thump of the foot hitting the bag it takes away one of our tools to make the call.

I know we discussed at one point Mythbusters busting that is is quicker to slide than to go in running. A few days ago on MLB Network the analysts were discussing sliding into first. I believe it was Mitch Williams who said that if sliding were actually faster, we'd be seeing all the Olympic runners doing it, but they don't.

I was trained to watch the touch and listen for the ball in the glove.

I thought the announcer was about to say it's hard to hear that soft toss from F4 or F1 close to F3, which is true.

FWIW, I liked the call. :)

But, but........Jake Taylor was safe sliding into 1st when Willie Mays Hayes rounded 3rd to score the winning run! Hmmm, must have been in the script.

The mythbusters thing doesn't apply in this situation.  They had the non-athletes (problem number 1) running and stopping at second - so of course they had to slow down the running.  If they had timed running through a bag compared with sliding wed get a different answer.

I had a kid slide at first tonight.I was ready to bang him and the ball came loose. He asked for time because he jammed his fingers. I told him the rules makers gave us this cool rule about running through first so it was faster, or you can slide, which is slower. And you can jam your fingers. Coach laughed and walked away.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...no.

I am not going to look it up on youtube, but I am 99.9999% that Taylor just flat beat out the play in question, there was no sliding involved.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think its legal to slide (dive) in sprinting at the finish line?  I'm sure sliding on a track would be a lot more painful than sliding on dirt !!

UIC, the MythBusters test was on bases you cannot overrun without risk of being tagged out (2nd and 3rd).  Because you could keep your momentum going with a slide at these bases, it was slightly faster.  However, because you can overrun first, it is faster just to keep pushing.

In track it's when your torso gets to the line so sliding or diving wouldn't help.

He was busting so hard he blew out his knee! If he had slid, he would have been out.
