"...a parent fired shots into the vehicle of a parent from the opposing team..."

Wow.  That is just plain nuts.  Nobody should have to worry about such things happening at a baseball game.

Parents get mad at umpires much more often than they get mad at the parents from the opposing team.  This sort of story makes me uneasy.

Unfreaking believeable.  5-6 y/o baseball and that's what their getting!  Just imagine the trauma these poor kids are having to endure.  Now you can't even go play a baseball game without a threat of violence, and we wonder why some younger kids have such a tough time in making appropriate judgements as they get older.  What can possibly be going through your damn head to even consider that this would be acceptable behavior.

Then they say their "looking" for the parent that did it! :WTF   How do you not know who just fired shots into your vehicle!  I hope they are just hiding out and they actually know who it is, so they can press this idiot to the wall and set an example.

I'm a big 2nd amendment guy my self.  I own many guns and LOVE to shoot.  But I do believe that we need extremely stringent background checks for purchases of guns.

I believe this, because I would pass a very stringent background check.

Follow me to my car and mess with me or my partner and you will not stay long.

Every umpire needs something in his car.

This is becoming more and more common.

Laws will not protect you when a person is emotionally distraught.

Two words, and they rhyme with "fun patrol".

I couldn't come up with anything that rhymes with "time-wasting non-solution" so I'll just type that.

Once you leave the field, the "Rules" are not in effect anymore.....

I had a parent once come after me as my partner and I was walking to the lot between tournament games..... I had my HSM in my hand and he kept standing in front of me yelling and I used it to walk through him to the TD table..... He then told the TD that I pushed him!

Guess what, you come after me, get in front of me and try to stop me from walking, you're lucky if the only thing that happens is that I push through you.

Sounds to me like they know who did it because they said the shots were fired at the vehicle of a parent on the opposing team.  The shocking thing to me in that report was the complete lack of any reference to a police investigation.  I would hope that if they don't know specifically who did it, they should be interviewing every parent until they find out, including getting ballistics on the rounds fired and comparing to any registered firearms of those parents.

I'm sure they can come up with some pretty serious charges to file in this case, even if the vehicle was unoccupied.

We can leave the political discussion to other forums, but as Big points out being prepared in today's world is a must. I personally make sure that if someone wants to confront something it happens in the vicinity of as many witnesses as possible. That said, there will be times somebody is dumb enough to want to chase you down, at that point they are clearly the agressor and liable for whatever problem they create for themselves.

Too many of us are getting confronted or worse.

Be prepared.

Don't rely on witnesses, league officials or anyone else but yourself and your partner.

Your family is counting on you to come home that night.

Restitution will not be forthcoming if you can't work.

These people are driven by revenge, passion, frustration, disappointment, alcohol or drugs.

Their motivation and actions will drive them to do things that they will regret the next day BUT they will act out that moment.

Logic and reason are not part of their thought process at that time.

I have personal experience in this area.

When I was umpiring 13 years ago I was 6’9’. 350 lbs.

We had a guy chase my partner, Doug, to our car after a game with a bat. He was maybe 5’7’ 160lbs.

I got in his way and yelled at him to stop; he hit my forearm with the bat and broke one of the bones in my forearm.

After subduing him he was still ready to fight when the police arrived and he regained consciousness.

My recent experience with radicals in the sandbox was similar, Logic, reason and fear is not how they think

Be the last man standing.

You family needs for you to come home

Appropriate screen name.

Now for a serious question - What if you are umpiring in a so-called "gun free zone" as may be the case in some schools? Do you ignore it?

I know we have a "no weapons" policy where I work that is not worth the paper it's written on.

I repeat:

"Be the last man standing.

Ignore it.

Train on how to use it, Know when to use it- use it.

I was trained and used this in my previous job: Meet any force with overwhelming force.

Come home to your family.

PM me if you need anymore.

Ah Vallejo, right near where I grew up. It's a place that oozes class. I had a game with one of their LL all star teams that ended with their parents wanting to wait for us in the parking lot and us needing a police escort to the freeway.

This game also featured grandmothers dropping F bombs and other such civilized behavior.

Dollars to donuts says the gun was illegally obtained by a prohibited person not allowed to own one.

I'll also say that Texas has a very good CHL law. And that's all I have to say about that.

I live about 20 minutes south of Vallejo - Both of my sons have started driving over the past couple of years, and among the advice I give them is, "Don't be caght in Vallejo after dark."  It's just too dangerous.

I checked and found a) that the Vallejo LL is back up & running as of last weekend; b) that they have requested police protection at their games, but the city may not be able to help because they have only 85 officers when they are supposed to have 160; c) that they have arrested a suspect on the initial shooting.
