Vanover is U1, who rotated to home on this play, ....too much movement by Vanover??

Almost  looks like he got blocked out and couldn't see if the catcher had still had possesion of the ball .  He starts 3b Line extended and rotates into the infield? looks like  he should have moved into foul territory.  But hey the call was right.

He saw the play on the first base line then stepped in closer to make the call. It may have been that he was making sure the ball was there or he just was getting closer to sell it.

Chris, actually I'm just asking the question is he moving too much?

And it's based on some of the discussions we had in the Fall regarding some other videos.....

Aren't you supposed to be on the catchers left hip? (glove hand).

I am not good at this type of play and movement from 3rd base line extended so that is why I am asking.... I want to learn and make sure I understand that's all :-)

The positional red-flag on this play should be PU having a picnic in the 3B cutout with no play imminent.

He had to rotate up because U3 went out.

What are you expecting of him on this play?

No, he shouldn't have moved into foul territory.  See 24's post.

I kind of agree with 24.  Why is he in the cutout if there isn't a runner and the ball at third base?  I'm no MLB umpire and I don't work much 4-man, but U3 went out so they reverted to a 3-man rotation.  As PU I would have stayed in foul ground on this play and taken any play at 3rd base from there instead of the cutout.  Just my two cents.

Only a guess but maybe he thought he could be in the runners way if he stayed in foul territory so he went inside to give the runner a clear path.  It was pretty clear there wasn't going to be a play at third and that the runner was going to try for home.  Then, of course, he needs to stay out of the way of the ball and any cutoff man.

And U3 could have gone out a lot further and or harder.

True, but usually when you rotate to third and you're going to stay there and you don't have to go back home for a play, you go past 3rd base to the outfield side of the base in foul territory to watch the touch of R1 and take any plays from up there as well.  It's not a huge deal to go inside, but he almost got drilled.
