Most likely calls to get argued

I was thinking about the types of calls that coaches argue most often.

I came up with a few:

-Balks (probably #1)

-Tag/No tag

-Catch/No catch

-Interference/obstruction

-Infield fly

-Fair/foul down the line

 

What about in your own experience?

Balls and Strikes needs to be near the top.

Bang bang plays on pick-offs and steal attempts.  The defensive coach always thinks they got him when it's close.  The offensive coach can not handle an out call on a pick off attempt.

In my (limited) experience, the #1 thing any given coach is likely to come out on is a questionable HBP.

As long as you didn't close your eyes, this is also one of the easiest discussions you can have.

Better add malicious contact to the list.  The kid is always a good kid who didn't mean it.  You could also list it as a point a under obstruction/interference.

Any rule where a coach thinks there is a loophole or perceived ambiguity and tries to use it to his advantage.

 

Example:  RHP in set with R2, as soon as he lifts his non pivot foot the runner takes off, F1 steps directly to 3B in an uninterrupted motion (no balk) and throws him out by 10 feet.  Coach will be claiming that F1 can't throw to unoccupied base.

This question can be answered a variety of ways, depending on how it is framed...what constitutes an argument? Absolute numbers, or rate per type of call?

 

In terms of rate, FPSR.

If arguing entails any disagreement, even without direct conversation, balls and strikes.

In terms of absolute numbers and on-field arguing, balks.

I usually don't get much on balks.

 

Checked swings (especially when ruled a strike from the middle).

Operational definition for this analysis consists of reasons for ejections by myself or a partner in order of most frequent occurrence by year:

 

2012 - 214 games:

1) Balls and Strikes (~20% were check swings)

T2) Out / Safe

T2) Interference

T2) Arguing ejection of player

5) MC

6) Inciting an opponent

7) Arguing a rule interpretation

 

2011 - 213 games: 

T1) Out / Safe

T1) Balls and strikes (0% check swings.)

3) MC 

T4) Balk (judgement of the balk; not a rule-based argument)

T4) Throwing at a batter (one pitcher after a warning, for a total of 2 ejections)

T6) Equipment throwing

T6) Interference (non-call)

T6) Pitcher altering baseball (partner found pine tar on F1's glove)

T6) Catch / no catch

 

 

2010 - 191 games:

1) Balls and strikes (~10% check swings)

T2) Out / safe

T2) Fighting

T4) Inciting an opponent

T4) Arguing rule interpretation

T6) Tobacco

T6) Unsportsmanlike conduct toward fans (specifically, a loud "f you!" from CF)

A man after my own heart.  Too bad I didn't have data like that to run.  Ok , back to crunching numbers (or filling out paperwork to get approval to crunch numbers) for my job.

Don't forget the mythical "halfway" rule, have heard this from the bleachers when awarding bases trying to get their guy an extra base.
