My son and I happened to be at the right place and right time. We did Vanderbilt's first intrasquad game this year at Hawkin's field. All turf except for the mound. I doubt we will ever get that chance again, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I did a little cage work for Turtle Thomas at old Alex Box. Not a game or on the field, but was stilll pretty cool.

I gotta echo Mike (Haid).  Kaufman Stadium for a college game was an awesome memory.   I also echo MidAm Ump, Bosse Field in Evansville, IN for a D1 game was a great memory as well.  Very historic place.

OK, I'm taking a little bit different tack on this one.

 

It's not the most "big time" field I've called on, it's not the most "well-appointed" filed I've worked on, it's not the newest, it doesn't even have fences that completely enclose the field, and it doesn't provide a breathtaking view like this one does:

 

 

 

But I believe it is my favorite.

 

It's located in a small (pop. 5,000ish) Illinois river town, adjacent to the community center/VFW hall. Both the local HS Varsity and a local men's league team use it as their home field. There was a big grove of oak trees beyond the RF fence, and backyards of house off the left field line. It seems like there are always fans there, ranging from toddlers to grandparents & everything in-between,

 

To me, games there are what baseball is all about. A bunch of guys getting together because they like to play, and for a coupe of hours everyone can forget about life's trials and tribulations in a quintessentially American setting.

This might fit better in the milestones section, but I got a last minute (48 hrs)  assignment to work a HS game at Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium last night.   (Padres High 'A' Affiliate plays there).

 

 3-man and I didn't screw it up.

Palm Springs Stadium. Used to be the Angels spring training facility. A broom closet for the umpire locker room and hotter than hell at times, but close to home, most of the time good ball and a chance to work with some really good umpires.

Couldn't get the tutorial to work, and couldn't get figure google map linking on my own.  So, I attached a picture instead.  Have had the pleasure of working high school tournaments at Ole Miss on Swayze Field.  My alma mater, and my favorite place to watch a baseball game(Busch Stadium is a close 2nd) when I am not on the field.

Here's our local LL field which is my favorite place to call games - 5 minutes from home, and field turf so no muddy or dusty shoes. Of the 50 or so games I've done so far this year probably 40 have been here. The Google shot shows the field configured for soccer though :-(

The picture is from a three years ago just after they had removed the dirt mound and replaced it with turf. Originally the field had dirt for the base & home plate cutouts and a dirt mound. The cut outs were replaced after a couple of years when the city determined that the dirt/clay was clogging the drainage system. So for a couple of years it was all turf except for a dirt mound. Then the city decided to get rid of the mound as well and went all turf. The league uses a portable mound now, although for next week when we start hosting Majors All Stars for WA District 1 the city will build a dirt mound. The all-turf nature of the field means we have virtually no rainouts, which is both good and bad! I have spent some miserable evenings out there when any other field would be rained out.
