generally, long sleeve shirt but if it's cold enough have no hangup about donning the jacket. No one around here uses plate coats.

Cold enough gets jacket. I'd wear a plate coat (if I had 1 :( )

I generally wear a long sleeve shirt unless it is crazy cold and windy. Then I will wear a jacket. I only have the tuckable smitty brand jacket for the plate and I don't really like it. It is thin and it just does not feel right.

I have Majestic thermabase full zip jackets, but I have never tried one on the plate. Unless it is cold with a wind I am usually the most comfortable wearing a long sleeve shirt with a long sleeve undershirt.

No one around here ever wears plate coats.

Our asociation stipulates in cold weather that we either wear the long sleeve shirt or a plate coat.  We're not permitted to wear our pullover behind the dish unless it's inclement weather (rain/snow).  The thermabase coats we have are bases only.  Lots of UA coldgear underneath.

Plate Coat for college (day or night if below 80 degrees)  and high school games (if below 80).  Wore a tucked-in Honig's jacket behind plate once in a college D2 game because it had been raining and muddy and they had to get the game in. Occasionally wear the long sleeved shirt with underarmour cold gear when working high school or travel or men's league and it's cool/cold.

Long sleeve shirt any day. Leave the jacket for field.

If I was in as good of shape as you are, I would maybe consider trying the long sleeve shirt, maybe.  :notworthy:    I honestly like the look of a jacket behind the plate (tucked in, I know, I'm in the minority), but rarely go that route.  Plate coats look so much more professional, and that goes for whatever level of ball you do!

if you need a jacet--then wear a plate coat--great look IMHO and if you get a good one it will last for many seasons

Absolutely true.  I had to buy a navy one in 1997, dry cleaned it before and after each season and has held up very well.  Just bought a black one in 2010, which will probably end up getting more time in nowadays, seeing black has become the main color up in these here parts, of the upper midwest.

I wear a tuckable jacket if it's really cold or if there is a chance of precipitation.  Long sleeved jersey on warmer days.  I pack as light as possible so I don't/won't own a plate coat.

Our HS association says wear anything you want to keep warm and focused. Just match your partner as far as the main color. Either black or navy. They don't care about the stripe color.

Get this - 1st year doing HS baseball in Tn.  We're suppose to wear navy hat and polo, but when it's cold we can wear the black jacket with white stripes.

How in the world do you make that work?  I hate navy hats with black tops so I'd rather wear my LS navy on the dish.  However if I wear LS navy behind the plate and my partner goes black jacket, now we look even worse.

With that said, what black plate jacket with white stripes do you guys use? I have the Majestic Therma for the field and love it, but doubt it's ideal for the plate.

Good post.

Also depends on the person.

To me chilling=cold

Cold=freezing

I have a Honig's open bottom jacket in black w/white stripes. I HATE the thing. I will wear a black or navy LS on the stick whenever possible. Cold & Rain is what it takes to get me in my jacket on the dish. I will layer coldgear under my shirt to stay warm if need be.

I will be trading up to a Therma-base for this year. I have to decide if I want Majestic or Smitty on that one. I like the look of blk/blue combo instead of the white stripes...just personal feelings. I am also going to try the Cool-base this year as well. I have found the Honig's open bottom just makes me sweat...very little warmth.

I own two plate coats, one navy and one black.  Navy for HS (since our backwards state will not allow black) and black for college.

I went without one for a few years and wore nothing but long sleeves on the plate then.  I *hate* wearing a pullover jacket on the plate.

No long sleeve shirts permitted by our organization. Also plate coats not permitted. Therefore pro style jacket on the plate for cold nights.
