  1. I had the same issue - most of the associations I work for were only offering stretch fit hats. I made nice with a local sporting goods store that would do the embroidery of the association in the hat of my choosing (Richardson fitted umpire hats). Of course, it costs more, but worth it in the end.
  2. I don't like the kick - never have. When I got started, my partner was a kicker. We worked a burst of games together and we debated this topic. We both held our ground and agreed to disagree until he kicked the barrel to clear a play at the plate in a game we worked together. However, the bat just rolled in circle and came right back and got in the way. The runner stepped on it and tumbled. He doesn't kick anymore.
  3. I would hope the HP umpire sent him back to 3rd. In a lot of cases when I don't HAVE to compete with crowd noise, I don't try to compete with crowd noise. If everyone is losing their minds in a "big game," I'll make eye contact with the 3rd base coach, flash him a time sign, say "time" in my regular tone, and clean the plate. p.s. just because a coach says he didn't hear an umpire call time, doesn't mean time hasn't been called.
  4. What about the left foot of the catcher? It seems pretty obvious that he kicked at R3 in attempt to obstruct the runner's path to the plate. I don't think this would qualify, but it does bring up something worth considering - how severe does a kick like that from F2 have to be to qualify for MC?
  5. $150 for a gallon? That seems really rich to me. I'm a fan of Odoban - $10 per gallon at all the big retailers. Make fun all you want, but lavender is the way to go. After a 1:1 dilution, it lasts for a good while.
  6. Question: Now that we have the manual to back us up in terms of telling a coach to stay in the dugout if we don't overturn an appeal, does that constitute as a warning or do we skip straight to restriction if he does come back out? I know what I'd like for the answer to be, but that doesn't mean it is the case. I can just see telling a coach to go back in the dugout while I conference with my partner and letting him know that he can't come back out over that call, then if he does come back out being expected to officially warn him for ignoring the warning of not coming back out. Le sigh.
  7. Although the baseball season will be in 2017, the school year is 16-17. I'm assuming that's the reason for the appearance of being off by one.
  8. Updated - With price drop on what's left. I have a list of items I'm looking to move that I've either never worn or have only worn a few times. I can send pics of items you're interested in, just let me know. Nike non-retail steel, silver frame, wilson harness - no pads. Hard to find. I've worn this guy for maybe 10 games over a 2 day period - $100 Diamond iX3, silver frame, cage only. Really good shape - $45 +Pos zro-g titanium colored frame (this is NOT a titanium frame, they just call the color titanium). Black TW pads, wilson strap. This guy has seen some wear but would be an awesome candidate for a powder coating project. $30. Honig's poly wool plate cut pants. Size 34. This are the older model that every one likes better than the re-vamp they've recently done. Never worn, or hemmed. They've just sat on the hanger for almost 2 years now - $70. Adidas Falcon Trainer 3 - black with white laces. Size 10.5. Tags are still on these. I LOVE them for the field, but just a little snug. - $30 Diamond iX3 chest protector, this one has seen some games but it's been years since I've worn her. Still in really good shape - $25

  10. Is it ok that I scrub my shoes way too much to be kicking dirt around unnecessarily?
  11. I'm a 2 bagger myself, though I have nothing against people wearing 1, as long as it doesn't slow up the pace of play. I had a partner once that would only keep 2 in his bag, we had to stop constantly to get more balls - not cool. I keep my indicator in the left ball bag and not my hand. I just reach in a click it after outs and about every other pitch. I love the feeling of having my heads freed up while I'm back there. I also want as many balls as I can fit out there without them spilling out when I'm running around. The less I have to look over to dugouts to ask for things, the better.
  12. I see all these posts about TW retrofitting this and that and then I see cool pics of what the new and improved chest protector looks like sitting on the floor or the kitchen table, but we don't see many actually being worn. I'd love to see what a Wilson TW looks like under an actual umpire shirt. Of course we all know that it's much more low-profile than how it was when you sent it, but under an ump shirt does the Platinum still look like a tank, albeit a slimmer tank? Do the shoulder caps on the Wilson still look like a tight end from the 80s? I know the second thing you guys did when you opened the box was try it on with a shirt in front of the mirror (we all know what the first thing was). I assume most of us are either interested in or have pulled the trigger on TW because of the all mighty low-profile meets protection combination, but I want to actually see it before I drop another $150 on a $150 CP. Before the peanut gallery chimes in, I could care less about seeing your jacked up mugs that only a mother could love. I'm well aware we all picked this gig mainly because we get to wear a mask in public.
  13. Doesn't it also have a little bit to do with the brand? I'm a true 33 waist and I wear 34 umpire pants. I've tried the Gerry Davis base pants and they were very slim fitting on me. I also have a pair of the polys and the base pants fit more baggy than GD combo pants. I've found the ploys to be very baggy in the crotch on both plate and base styles unless I pull them up 4 inches above my navel. GD has a much truer rise in my opinion. I realize the color is not popular here but when focusing on styling alone, my point is not all brands fit the same. Also does personal frame/build not enter into the equation? Just like anything else, try it on and look in the mirror. If you think you look like a clown, you probably do. If you feel you look Game 7 ready, you probably do. We're typically our own worst critics.
  14. Heavier or lighter than the Force 3?
  15. No dog in this fight, but I think it's worth reading into that there hasn't been many listed on the secondary market. You see every CP known to man on Ebay, even a Carlucci recently. I don't see many Unequals on the there or listed other places. I wonder if that's because the guys that got one love it that much, if they spent too much on it to try to get any money recooped if they didn't like it, or if there just aren't that many guys that bought one in the first place so there aren't that many floating around. Perhaps a combination of all three and then some, but I still think it's interesting to consider.
  16. I need the experts! I won an ebay auction on a Nike Ti mask earlier today and I wanted to make sure it was legit before I sent payment. I come to the greatest collection of ump geeks I know for help. The frame looks like the real deal and the elongated throat guard also looks Nike to me, but my eye isn't as keen to the differences as some of the guys here. Maybe your post will help other guys discern the fakes so they don't get bamboozled. Thanks fellas! http://www.ebay.com/itm/NIKE-TITANIUM-CATCHERS-UMPIRE-MASK-/251654125748?ssPageName=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSA%3AUS%3A1120&nma=true&si=H5jlctCgZY26xrW%252F3QPCn%252Ff1yi0%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  17. http://www.homerunsports.info/vpro-umpire-chest-p-25372.html Here you go. Every time I strap this guy on I like it more and more. I've also had most of my partners comment on it with a few getting one of their own.
  18. I too have been on the hunt for the lowest profile CP with the most protection possible. I realize this is almost an oxymoron but still, that's been my goal. After trying a Charcoal and then a Douglas, I ordered a V-pro/sport, All-American, whatever we're calling it now a days and I love it. I realize this is basically the same CP as the Champion but it still has the velcro padding system. I contacted Team Wendy last week about getting it retrofitted and they said they could. That will be a fall project for me when I can live a few weeks without it. I've taken some hard varsity shots and so far no damage but I want to upgrade it so I can use this as my main rig without any concerns. Sure it's around $30 more than the Champion, but with the TW option I think it might be worth looking into for some of you.
  19. Man, I can't wait to not buy this.
  20. Alright so after so after 15 games ranging from 11U up to high school varsity, Im in love! These suckers are light, comfortable, light, don't shift around, just as protective as anything else I've tried, and they're light. I took a straight shot of the knee Monday night in a varsity with a good velo arm on the mound and nothing. The only cons - the ankles are exposed. However It's forced me to keep my feet more square to the pitcher which is keeping my shoulders more square. The velcro does catch your pants a little, but if you make sure the velcro is flush when you put them on it's not as bad. The longevity of the velcro straps concerns me slightly but I think that's something I could easily have fixed for a small amount of money. I think these might be permanent for me. Im sure the West Vest, Douglas, and other top brands are awesome but for the price, weight, and protection, I just don't think I'm going to find anything better out there.
  21. Fellas, Looking to unload some Diamond ix3 shins for about $15 plus shipping. They're not in perfect condition but they're not in bad condition either. They'd be perfect for you guys that run a group where you try to provide equipment. Get with me if you're interested and I'll try to ship them out for the least amount possible.
  22. What's the #1 item on your wish list? What's the likely hood of you actually pulling the trigger on that item? What's stopping you? I want a Nike mask. I realize they're insanely priced and yadda-yadda. The way I see it, I work really hard out there and work a lot of games Monday through Sunday so it's a treat to myself; an indulgence. I decided to put back just $5 from every game I work until I hit the goal. It hasn't been that hard to do and I think this might be my new system for upgrades from here on out. Half way there and I should be able to hit my goal by the end of next month!
  23. The bench is going to use dirt and probably spit 9 times out of 10 like everyone else does across the world (gasp). However they're not going to do it on the mound with all eyes in the park on them and then throw with it before an umpire touches it. I have a hunch you already knew that, though. I have a hard time believing nobody has heard someone make a stink about F1 using dirt to rub the ball down on the mound. My goal is to simply prevent that crap from happening in the first place. Again, once coaches learn to have balls rubbed before they're turned in this all takes care of itself.
  24. WHAT ?!?!?!?!?!? Hhaha Should I make the qualifier VARSITY coaches? JV is a totally diff beast.
  25. I've never ruffled any feathers with this approach in the past so I don't see the issue. Again this doesn't happen every game. Most coaches know better. The most common reaction I get is the coaches realize the error and I get a "oh, my bad." Perhaps something is lost in translation on here. I have a pretty laid back demeanor in general so it's not at all harsh. Let's say it's more of a request with a sideways frown and not a ruler to the knuckles approach. Then we move on with the meeting. Also it's amazing when I do this some how the rest of the game balls are rubbed down when they bring me refills.
