Question

Posted

Can you guys give some guidance on the best type of insurance we umpires should get?

I carry a liability umbrella policy and was under an impession that I would be covered under that. After talking with my agent he informed me that I more than likely wouldn't be since I get paid.

So now I am researching the different programs that offer umpire insurance and thought I would ask for some input to make sure I am not missing anything. You can read what the different players offer but who knows how hard it is to actually put in a claim and to use the actual coverage.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Are you asking for more than what NFHS and/or your state association covers?

How are claims handled.

Do you go to ER and tell them your an Umpire and for them to call ABUA or NASO for payment?

I would highly recommend you check into getting insurance from NASO or ABUA.

It is not about covering you medically if you get hurt.

What you want is the protection of liability to be protected against a lawsuit.

If someone gets hurt and decides to sue, you can bet they will be suing the league/organization and all umpires on the field.

As a independent contractor of an Association do not assume they have you covered with insurance.

Protecting yourself is your responsibility.

If you think you are covered by say, Little League, when you umpire their games, you better be a 100% full volunteer. If you are getting paid to work games they do not cover you.

If you join PONY as a umpire you also get some insurance.

If you Umpire and don't have Medical Insurance you are playing Russian Roulette and wish you luck.

One good injury, especially if you require transport by Ambulance will take up your game fees for a long time.

I am glad I have it.

Last Injury: Fractured Lyrnx from a throat shot on a foul into the dirt.

XRAY, HD CTScan, Urgent Care Doctor, ENT Specialist who scoped my throat, My Cost $12.

Hate to see what the Insurance is actually paying out to them.

Would you get behind the plate without plate gear?

Don't get on the field without protecting everything else you own.

I was looking at it, and is it $10 per year for the accident coverage AND game fee reimbursement plan? I just wanted to make sure I was reading the information properly.

It's cheap b/c there's minimal risk. For $10 per year...basically one inning of work for me all year, has me covered.

I think the op asks a great question and maybe we can get some information packets placed on the site for what the insuarnce covers.

I am covered by Little League, but I always ask, "what does that mean?" If I take one tothe head and I can't do my day job anymore?

These things need to be answered.

From the VHSL website, I navigated to a link on Official's Insurance that had this info:

What activities are covered?:

  • Insurance coverage applies while the member is performing his/her officiating duties during a regularly scheduled sports or activity competition.
  • The sport or activity must be recognized in that state by the member state high school association or by high schools that follow the state association guidelines.
  • If the sport is recognized by the state high school association for men or women, the official will be covered for officiating that sport for both men and women.
  • Officiating duties include chain crews and attending officiating camps, clinics and meetings.
  • Coverage for officials extends, not only to high school activities, but also to college, independent youth, adult and recreational leagues. However, coverage is still limited only to sports recognized by the state high school association.
  • Direct travel to and from a covered activity

I carry NASO in addition to the NFHS,LL, and Pony secondary insurance. The nice thing about NASO is you get assault insurance. Many mention you get Referee magazine with it but be careful of what they say, they aren't always right on rules. NASO, and ABUA too I think, give you game fee coverage.

Where do you see this price?

Our HS association requires proof of insurance. No proof, no schedule. They are making a big deal about it this year.

I bought the ABUA insurance last year. Cheaper than NASO and I only do baseball.

What type of insurance? Basic medical or some type of liability insurance?

I have carried NASO for most of my HS career, also ABUA for several years. NASO is more expensive but it gives you more, just depends if you want the extras. If not ABUA is good coverage.

I have the NFHS this does cover for rec games too.

I would definitely make sure I have some level of protection.

I just checked the AHSAA site. Our insurance runs from 7/1-7/1 annually
