CP question

I know we've all seen the discussion about protection in regards to your CP.

And, we've also seen comments on utilizing larger sized CPs to cover your lower ribs.

Also, we know there are those who wear a shorter CP with their ribs exposed because in your crouch, you're not vulnerable there.

QUESTION:

For those who DO wear a shorter CP ( 12" or 13" ), and are 6ft tall, and say 200+, and your bottom ribs aren't totally protected.....

HAVE YOU EVER CAUGHT ONE THERE ?

I understand a tummy shot, ....I'm talking ribs ........so you're saying "no" ....a stomach shot, but no ribs, correct?

At 6'2 and 215 I fit the category and I can say I did not take a DIRECT rib shot with my shorter CP that I had. However I did have an odd HBP that grazed the batter and hit me square in the ribs thats one in a thousand. 99.9% of the time I say your fine.

I'm 6'1", 185, and wear a 12" Platinum. But, I put my arm under the bottom of my c/p, in my normal stance, which covers my ribs.

I've had a fractured rib, and trust me, you don't want that pain. Find a way to cover them, fellas.

I am 6'2", 275lbs and wear a 12" All Star system 7....I will NEVER feel what it's like to get a rib hit!!!! The All Star covers all the bone due to it's design. If you have not seen or tried one on, do it. I love this thing and I have taken 2 shots this summer that made nothing but noise. One was right at the collarbone on an inside pitch that F2 barely got a glove on and deflected right into my CP. I looked at the scoreboard and the gun had it at 87mph...I felt the hit as it hit me square...no pain just vibration and a very loud thud. I wouldn't trade the System 7 for anything else.

I had a Gold but sold it this year in favor of the 15" All-Star. The Gold had better padding but simply did not cover my last rib. A few weeks ago, I had a bouncer that hit the lower left edge of the All-Star. If that were my Gold, it would have most definitely hit that rib.

I'm 6', 210 and my old Douglas covers my last rib, my Gold doesn't. Eight years with the Gold and only last summer did that last rib get hit; batter lowered his bat on an inside pitch the ball got above my locked elbow ( ) to the rib.

Sore, but no big deal, although I had always been concerned about that last rib.

I've been hit below my WV gold. 55-foot curve that he F2 failed to block in any way. Hit me straight on in the stomach, below the CP. Some fans told the catcher that he made a nice stop! It stung a bit, but was not an issue of any kind after that.

It's almost anatomically impossible (I think) to keep your torso straight up while getting down into a reasonable crouch --- unless you squat all the way down like a catcher will sometimes do --- hamstring on calf. So, you will be bend over a bit, at least, at the waist. That compresses the region below the CP, and tilts your torso. Both effects reduce the chances of being hit below the CP. And, any straight on shot will not hit you flush, but at an angle, since your torso is tilted, and the ball will deflect down. Really, the only balls that can easily get to your stomach will be bouncers that are generally slower pitches (e.g., a curve), and have lost some momentum by hitting the ground.

In the end, it's pretty hard to cover all your ribs down to the very bottom. On me there is about a 4" gap between the bottom of my ribs and my pelvic bone --- on my *sides*. If you tried to cover all the way down to there, you'd have a hard time getting into any stance. But you don't need to cover those ribs all the way downon the side if you stay square and tuck your arm across or elbows in. I tuck in my elbows against my sides so the only thing exposed, really, is some part of my stomach below the WV Gold.

I was sporting the 13" Wilson Charcoal, but now a Douglas of the same size.

I am 6'1" and wear a 14" Douglas. I haven't taken one in the stomach with the Douglas (Knocking on wood now), but I did take at least one with my WV Gold when I had it. It wouldn't have mattered if the CP were longer though, as it came from underneath. I love my Douglas, but sometimes I wish I had a 13" instead of 14".
