Watching the World Series I've been really interested in the caps Joe Maddon and some of the players are wearing. The ones with the flip down ear covers. I visited the new era site and couldn't find them.

I would probably be interested in this if it came out in the umpire navy blue and a 6 or 8 seam option.

The question is would an umpire wearing such a cap be considered Smitty or not?

At the times it is really needed, I probably wouldnt care if it was or not....I have, at one time or another, worn every shirt and jacket I had with me....gloves and an ear band for some of those early march, snow flurry filled freezer fests....

The players get to go into the dugouts with the portable propane heaters while we flap in the breeze.....Im a stickler for proper dress and decorum, but reality is reality.....(Plus Ive never been evaluated in a rain or snow storm....in my experience evaluators tend to be fair weather types...)

I guess its all in context......wearing that hat in weather not appropriate would smack of being smitty.....

As Stan said, in the proper inclimate weather then I wouldn't have a problem with it. Once it warms up you need to put it on the shelf.

I work Feb baseball, so I can tell you about cold games, but I see no difference between the hats, ear grips or the ear bands. Watch pro ball and you will see some ear bands when it's cold.

I carry with me a navy hood (and a black one for football). That goes underneath the hat. I also have the ear bands which I have used in March/April. I haven't found it cold enough yet for the hood. When it comes to being warm, I don't care if someone calls me a Smitty, or a Jonesy.

I would have no problem with it if conditions warranted. I have one of those hoods you see football players wear from time to time, thankfully I have only had to wear it once.

I'd rather be warm and comfortable and be able to concentrate on the game than be freezing and lose concentration as a result of it.

Here in Upstate NY, we have two seasons: winter and road construction.

Our baseball seasons start early enough that we have to worry about getting both rained-out and snowed-out. A cap with ear flaps? I'll take two please!

After doing a High School JV game with a temp. of 35 degrees with a 20-30 mph wind this past spring, I call my Association VP and asked if one of theseFH.jpg was allowed, he replied "around here, they are dang near REQUIRED.

I once walked onto a J.C. field to do the bases for a game in Maryland in late March wearing the most beautiful pair of ear muffs you've ever seen...conservative dark blue, but fuzzy and they just looked warm! I got cat calls and hoots from both dugouts, of course....and by the second inning I had one player offer me $25 on the spot for my muffs. I chuckled and walked away, warm as toast.

Hey, Blue, how many outs?

Huh?

How ... many ... OUTS?

I work in and around L.A. One time, I was working this 25-U wood bat game at Malibu. It was so cold that most of the players' wives and girlfriends had to put on sweatshirts and blouses over their bathing suits. It must have been 55 or 60 degrees! I was forced to wear TWO undershirts!

But you have to take the bad with the good, I say.

I had one of those on this past spring during game where it was about 34 degrees with 20 mph winds and was spitting snow for most of the game. I pulled the bottom part up over my nose so all you could see were my eyes.

I call R1 out on a steal attempt to end an inning. The HC, who was coaching at third, didn't like it and basically threatened to call my assigner (Said that he "Wouldn't like it that I was wearing that") as he went back to the first base dugout. Looking back, I probably should have said something back to him (Like "Go right ahead, he's not the one out here freezing his butt off"), but I was already headed to right field so I just kept running.

Smitty is a term of endearment towards the bumbling oafs of umpiring. The guys who wear their hats backwards, shins over their pants, etc..

Funny, I've never know it to be a term of endearment. A term used derisively, yes, but certainly not endearment.

Anyone that's had a clinic with Jim Evans will know that he uses the term "Charlie" in place of "Smitty".

"Ol' Charlie... he'll tell you he has 20 years experience... but it's more like 1 year of experience 20 times."
