Anyway, there's this Southern California oldtimer that I have umpired with five times, starting in 2008. Starting in 1998, he umpired many of my son's PONY games, and even a couple of his high school games. And starting in 1968, he umpired my Little League games. He's in his 70s, and still at it!

Well, he's a Smitty, without peer from faded head to goopy toe. And it is definitely a sign of affection.

Cap: faded purplish beanie (adjustable, of course)

Shirt: faded purplish navy shirt in that distinctive nylon dazzle material stretched over a vintage ribbed CP

Slacks: faded pinkish heather combos (generally wrinkled)

Belt: cracked, scratched patent leather

Ball bag: Three-looper nylon

Shoes: Decades-old plate shoes with Leather Lustre gooped on all over them

Mask: Decades-old double-bar with Leather Lustre gooped on wherever the coating is cracked (I kid you not), and pads that have some of the stuffing sticking out, even though it's taped with friction tape.
