Well, we're just about halfway through the Oceanside Umpire Training Seminar (O.U.T.S), and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed. Not only is it quality instruction, but quality instructors. Led by Bob Bainter, we also have Mark Facto (Supervisor of Umpires for the Atlantic League), Marty Bauer (Atlantic League umpire), Greg Chittenden (former PCL umpire and Mid-American Umpire Camp instructor) and James Pattison (Atlantic League umpire). All of them are VERY approachable and invite every umpire to pick their brain as much as they want, an aspect I really like.

When I first got here, I felt like I'd be way behind. Out of the 36 guys here, 33 have been to one of the umpire schools. (I have not been to any kind of umpire school, camp, clinic, etc.) Other than some minor adjustments, I think I'm actually holding my own, which I'm quite proud of.

We are all assigned crews of 3, working one game as a 2-man crew (base guys rotate every inning) and each of us will work a plate at least once. We have a decent amount of free time (normally done by 2pm every day unless working a game), so it's kind of like a mini vacation that way. A group of us went to Orlando Friday night for the University of Central Florida/East Carolina game. Their field is amazing, and the #19 UCF Knights came out on TOP 2-1.

Since there are so many students, we have 12 crews of 3...I'm part of crew #12 and our first game is tomorrow (Sunday 3/25) at 10am in Daytona Beach, FL. I picked to take the dish first (mainly to ensure I would get seen working the plate). I'll let you know how it goes!

Just googling. Did you go to Church Street Station? How about to the dog track or the jai-alai fronton? Seen any launches from Cape Canaveral?

Woa. Why didn't you tell us and they ejected the ECU coach in the 8th inning. Looks like there was a balk called. Was that the reason? It also looks like Jim Garman who has worked many CWS's without googling his history, was the 3rd base umpire.

Don't yell about ECU too much. They are the closest D-1 school in NC to UIC just looking at google maps.

Anyway, glad you are learning a lot and enjoying the experience. Let us in on what was learned as the various topics come up on the board.

And I just so happened to have spent some of the best years of my life there.

Glad, your having a good time and are learning alot. Warren.... maybe we should AD a camp review section on this site. It could be a way that we could give are experiences of the different camps so we all can make an educated decision going forward on any camps we would like to, or are considering attending.

Just a thought.

Just wrapped up Day #8 at O.U.T.S, and must say, it's probably the best $500 I've ever spent. Out of 36 students, I was one of 3 who had never been to umpire school (Wendelstedts, Evans, or the PBUC school). I was voted by the instructors as "Most Improved Umpire," and I feel like I'm 100 times better than when I got here last week. Now the decisions start being made about jobs (I'm not in the running...told Bob I didn't want to work the Northwoods League)...so the games we work tomorrow are the last chance to impress for a lot of guys. Will give a full review when I return to St. Louis on Friday afternoon.

Good for you!!! Congrats!

Do they have other camps during the year?

Thanks!

As far as I know, this is the only camp that Bob Bainter runs. The other instructors (other than Greg) are busy during the summer working in the Atlantic League. Greg Chittenden runs the 2 camps in September that are held in Springfield, MO.

Well..........technically he runs 1 camp in Springfield. I run the other ;) . Greg is one of the best instructors I've ever been around. If he recited the alphabet, you'd learn something.

Which camp does he run in Springfield? Are there supervisors for college conferences at both camps? I'm still trying to decide which one I should attend.

Greg helps run the Mid-American Advanced Umpire Clinic. I run the Mid-American Umpire Clinic. Greg instructs at both clinics.

We have college supervisors at both clinics. My clinic is designed more for umpires looking to move into college baseball. The advanced clinic is designed more for umpires who currently work college baseball.

Jason (MidAmUmp) runs the Mid-American Umpires Clinic

http://www.midamericanumpireclinic.com/ <---- leads to both clinics

The Advanced Clinic site is not up to date, but it ran the week afer Jason's clinic.

Supervisors were at both. The Advanced Clinic will focus on three man mechanics; Jason's will focus on two man.

Go to both if you can. I did last year. I was seen at both and I was able to network and get college assignments this year. I worked a GLVC Conference double header D-II) this past weekend with UM-St. Louis and Bellarmine and felt quite comfortable even though this is my first year working college ball. I have also had D-III and NAIA games.

PM me or MidAmUmp.

I'm working on getting both sites updated. The dates are - Mid-American Umpire Clinic: Sept. 7-9 & Mid-American Advanced Umpire Clinic: Sept. 13-16.

I hope to have both sites updated in about 2 weeks. Kind of hard to get to all of it during the season, but I'll get it done.

I mean I currently work a few JUCO and small Division III games here and there, but I'm looking to get a more complete schedule for next year. Which camp would you recommend?

Seems like it depends on if your games are two man or three man games. In our area, our JUCO and D3 are two man, if you are jumping right into a D2 and up schedule, then maybe a three man clinic will work. Heck, if you can swing both, fire it up!!

Jason, I just sent you a PM. So, the O.U.T.S. has officially come to an end. As I sit here in the Houston airport awaiting my flight to STL, it's fun to reflect back on everything that we did in the short 9 days. From double play footwork to working live games, to the nights at the Sandbar (a hotspot in Cocoa Beach!) with all the instructors just talking and listening to stories, it was definitely money well spent. I feel like not only a completely different umpire, but just a completely different person as well. Once I get home and really reflect on the trip, I'll start a new topic and write a detailed (and probably lengthy) review of the camp.

On a side note, as soon as I landed in Houston, I had a new game assignment from my college assignor...hopefully this is a sign of good things to come!

I'm about 90% sure I'll be at the Mid-American this year in my East Coast Umpiring tour....

Last I checked, Missouri isn't on the east coast. :D

GSL...you did great this year!

Jason...I guess I didn't do a good enough job of explaining who runs the camps in Springfield! Lol

We had a great time this year...some logistical issues that will be addressed next season, but a great time had by all!

Bob, I had to clear it all up...Chit is going to want more $$$ if he thinks he's running both clinics!!!!!!

Sounds like you guys had a good camp. I'm happy for you guys.

GSL how much did it cost you in total (besides the flight and any money you spent buttering up the instructors)? I wouldnt mind attending a camp next year and either OUTS or BBUC sound like my best choice. BBUC is closer to me but I think OUTS would be less expensive.
