I was working with a guy I have called with once before. He is new to High School like I am and we were working a JV game. These two schools are well known in the area as two of the best and I figured we would see some good baseball. But instead I was falling asleep on the infield watching walk, after walk, after walk. He was not giving them anything. If it was not over the plate and between the knees and belt it was a ball. After the TOP of the second inning when I knew he should have adjusted his strike zone, I made a comment to him and told him he may want to open it up a bit. He told me he thought his strike zone was fine. I told him my stike zone was and that I will give Varsity one ball off the plate, JV I may give two and knees to bottom of the elbows. He blew me off and I left it at that. It was a long 2 hour 5 inning game.

Should I have said anything or should I have said something differant?

2 hour for 5 innings, tones of walks and when I was in "B" & "C" position it was all I could do to not shake my head at some of the balls he called. I know I'm not perfect so I try to keep that in mind but it was crazy.

Regardless of how long the game goes, there's never any reason to undress your partner about his strike zone during the game.

I would've blown off your comments too.

Just sayin'

I wouldn't say anything unless he asks. Or maybe wait till after the game. If he doesn't listen let the coaches and spectators have him. If he is a good umpire he will make the adjustment.

Strike zone is for the PU. Bases are for the BU. Unless asked, leave it alone. You have your responsibilities and he has his. The strike zone wasn't one of them.

It sucks but endure it and be ready.

If he asks about hows the zone, tell to open it up. If not let the coaches chew on him. If both are complaining, it may make him realize he isn't calling the zone for the level he is working. After the game explain what you saw.

Only time you should talk to your partner is before the plate meeting and after the game.

Unless you need to discuss a ruling.

I did 13 innings behind the dish last night. It was a single 7 inning HS ball game, tied 6-6 after 7. I NEVER talked to my partner once during the game, NEVER.

Post game we spent an hour going over the game. It was my eval. game to see if I was ready to move to the highest classification in our state. Several guys work Juco, DII and NAIA games that work this level...I was given a C+ and told that I needed to polish up a few things but I would be getting some of that level games. Never understood how or why umps talk on the chalk??? That's all post game stuff....

Sometimes just to say hi, and chat.. I do it once a game, but just to see what up.. or maybe something was funny.. or about where we should eat.

Or maybe if something came up so you don't burn yourselves again (in case you forgot something in your pregame or something wierd is happening with the field conditions). But this is rare and should be used sparingly.

I might not say it but Id think "get the f out of here and dont bother me unless you have something important to say."

Ditto...I work nothing higher than HS. I want to move up to work college at some point. My issue will be I started too late in life(41)...we are told to NEVER talk during a game, period. BU goes to RF - plate guys goes to baseline of team that is hitting in that half inning...

Yep. I'll go chat once in a game, especially if I'm bored to death.

Really? If I'm the PU and the BU is not coming to talk every inning, I don't have an issue with a chat once in a while. What bothers you about it so much?

There are times when it is appropriate to get together. Just to make small talk and BS isn't one of them.

You mean to tell me you've never gone in to BS with some of your boys??? Come on Troy, I've seen you work...don't give me that crap!!!

Umpires shouldn't be chatting every half inning, but I can't go through a game on the bases without talking to someone, even if it's just to compare notes on the talent in the stands!

I'll give you that! Personally, I try to minimize visits. 5 games, 2 visits.

When you are behind the plate and your partner comes in to chat every inning, it gets irritating. Does anyone have a tactful way to let him know not to do that without being overly rude?

I doubt if many people discuss this at pre-game. But my question was really intended to address the issue happening during the game.
