"What are you doing?"

"Nothing, Honey." (said as he quickly clicks on another window)

"What do you mean, 'nothing'? You're looking at umpire gear again, aren't you?"

"No, Honey; I'm, uh, reading the news."

Last night my shin guards arrived. I had to take them upstairs to unbox them. I didn't want to hear "That's not more umpire stuff, is it?" from SWMBO.

Late last week it was two pair of pants, two shirts, a ball bag and a line up wallet, Monday it was a pair of persimmon lenses for the Oakleys, the new mask is enroute as I type. Oh Lucy, someone has some 'splaining to do........

Simple fix guys, just have it sent to your office! Then you unpack it, and sneak it in.....

That's what I do!

Then when she asks me if something I have is new I say - No honey I've had it for years!

I got the Wilson Charcoals as a primary set, and a pair of the Diamond Featherweights for doing youth ball.

Question about the Featherweights. They have ankle pads that conflict with my NB450s. The pads flare out to the sides so it looks like there are wings on my shoes. My plan is to cut off some of the ankle pads so that the front of the guards will sit down nice and tight to the TOP of my shoes. I figure that my ankles will still be protected by the shoes. Is this a bad idea?

I've done this so many times I have lost track. Not just for umpire stuff. It works for motorcycle parts, gun stuff, etc.. My secretary looks at me funny though.

Exactly what I just did... I've ordered a ton of stuff in the last month, so when I ordered my new plate shoes (How can you pass up a $50 pair of NB?) I got a lecture. So I had to have the shirt and ball bags I ordered (they were on sale too!) sent to the office...

Come on now.... at least make it believable! Say you're checking the score of the UCLA game!

My wife really doesn't care too much. I use the oldest trick in the book. Bribery. A well timed dinner out, a Coach bag, a bead for the bracelet, car detailed. It all works if she is sharing from the spoils. I am lucky that the game fees are all gravy. The separate checking account keeps a good level of peace.

So far I just say that I've earned more from umping than I have spent on gear. Now she may be upset at my next plan. West vest CP and shin guards and a few pairs is poly wools a few shirts with state logo and hats. This is in addition to the recent Jim Evans book, pro nine bag, nb450 shoes socks etc. I may have to start hiding it. Haha I've also used the excuse I don't drink smoke work on cars go to strip clubs or golf( anymore) seems to work ok.

Wish my stuff would come in. No gear needed. But entire new shirt, jacket and hat wardrobe. Moving from pro to NCAA. Bunch of shirts, jackets and hats (freaking numbers and embroidery) . More than I expected to drop. With that said been waiting way too long for Honigs to get into gear 4 weeks and counting. If I didn't have to order from them for uni's I certainly wouldn't. I'd do everything with Jim at Ump-attire.

Four weeks? Why?

Most conference uniforms come from Honigs. So they end up with a ton of orders come January...I guess. Either way its been a bunch of empty promises. Don't get me wrong there are some good guys working there and I personally know several. But if Ump-attire had conference logos I think people would easily leave for them. I know with equipment...Jim gets my business.

One thing I tried and can be classified as an epic fail,,,,

Once when she made a fuss about an order I made the mistake of saying, "Well you spend more on your hair in a year than I do on gear."

Bad move... :shakehead:
