Here are some Reebok plate shoes with and without leather luster, in case some are curious.

I think I'd do it the military way. Toes and heels. Skip the sides.

Am I the only guy to use leather conditioner on his leather shoes?

Kyle, we're not talking about shoe "care" so to speak .... it's more about 'cleaning' them, which I know should be a part of it, but .....you know what I mean.

Kyle makes a good point here fellas .......

Leather shoes need a leather conditioner also as in most proper shoe-care. ;)

So a year of using hair spray and Murphy's Oil soap, I've noticed that if you don't get all the hair spray off every time you clean then it leaves a cloudy film on the shoes when they get wet.  Make sure you get it all off then start over each time you clean them.  I'm also a fan of a good polishing, Kiwi polish, lighter and a moist cotton ball, for a good base of shine.

Alex, how labor intensive is doing the full leather luster job? Also when I used to use the stuff it got really caked on. How often do you reapply?

I recommend that after you completely clean the old stuff off that you use some really fine sandpaper on the shoes the apply the luster. The maybe even lightly sandpaper again and reapply.

Sanding my umpire shoes sounds like WAY too much work for me!!  Murphy's Oil and hair spray works just fine for me...

Using LL one time on your shoes gives your shoes a patent look that will last 3-6 YEARS.  After each game, you simply wipe off a whatever dirt or mud splashed on it, and that's it.  Very easy to clean because of the smoothness and lack of pores in the leather. That's the good news.

It is labor intensive, and I only recommend it if you really love the patent look (it is kinda awesome, especially during night games) and are very capable with prolonged directions, or can find someone to do it for you (my method!).

I had a friend do it, took 3-4 days, scrubbing off original coat of color, applying LL once, waiting, drying, applying it again, waiting, smoothing, and then a third coat.  But then you're set for years.

Guys do not, I say again, do not use Leather Luster.

It will ruin the shoes.

I used it once in the Marines and it cracked and ruined a pair of boots.

I would never use it again.

I have been using it for years. No Problems.

Marines can't shine shoes!

If the LL is too much work, and I agree it is at least for me, then use Shape Up.  No or almost no prep, shines great.  Lasts only about a season though instead of the multiple for LL.  Still, overall its a great tradeoff.

Hopefully you can just clean and wear them. I have a pair of NB plate shoes that are on their third year and haven't seen polish yet.

This.

Going on year 4 of my Reeboks and maybe polish them once every 2 or 3 weeks, depending on how dirty they get.  Just spray them down with regular old tap water after each game.  Takes maybe 2 minutes, and I guarantee that my unpolished (but clean) shoes look just fine next to anybody's full-on spit shine that they spend 15 minutes on.  Guaranteed.

The primary partner that I work with used to have these shoes.... But that has been quite a few years so maybe the newer versions are more comfortable? Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

I donkt think there is a new version. They're on clearance with very limited available sizing options.
