There’s 2 ways to be wrong in handling lightning/weather. If you’re not sure which one you are on, stop umpiring.

Dang, that’s the 2nd sport I’ve thought about picking up.

I had lunch once with Tim Belcher at a HoF event. Obviously everyone is asking him about his playing days, etc. Got to talking about pro money & contracts. He said, “you’re worth exactly what someone pays you.” If no one buys them, his loss. If someone buys them, it wasn’t your money.

Hit by pitch - “Time!” This allows you another second or 2 just to replay in your mind what happened. If you discern that, in fact, it didn’t hit the batter, you can then rule on keeping him in the box or awarding 1st. Ball rolls/is thrown out of play - “Time, that’s out of play!” Runner interference - “That’s interference!” while pointing at the play(er). Followed by “Time! That’s interference!”……if it’s necessary because player(s) didn’t stop playing.

Or he found a popular, no longer available shoe, and decided to buy/sell it because they aren’t his size….then make a few bucks. Big deal.

1. That’s all you need. On judgement calls, “I had…” is enough. The rest is puff. 2. Good. Coaches don’t get to shop around on judgement calls, I don’t care if he thinks “you were straightlined” or if you called it from Timbuktu. 3. He has no basis for thinking you “need help.” Personal soapbox, for no other reason do I hate IR in sports, than it’s infused down to amateur sports in the form of “find someone else to give me what I want.”

A new one I hadn’t seen yet…..Jump roping after the double. R2 is bouncing on the base and gets tagged. He was very slightly bouncing and not actually coming off the bag. Had he been a little higher, defense was actually paying attention with a tag. It’ll happen some time though.

Unless you’ve got R3, why call time (and even then, can we?) I agree. The rule & any accompanying case play(s) could be written as such.

I tend to agree on this. Although I’m not in education to know the workings of teaching contracts. In Ohio, schools have “supplemental contracts” for athletic coaches. Seems they could put it in there.

Mine was almost that good. Am. Legion DH, two 7s. I had been communicating with the HTHC about 3 hrs prior to game time. The radar looked terrible. Simply asked to be kept up to date, I’m ready for any decision on the games. We finish gm 1 and the horizon looks like the wicked witch of the west is releasing her monkeys. Coach asks if we can get the next one rolling in like 20 minutes. Partner and I look at each other and say, “OK.” We hustle up and switch out. T1: Leadoff walk on 4 pitches, B2 fly ball to LF, B3 is 2 pitches in when I swear the rain clouds start dumping water balloon size raindrops. It sounds like the local highway through town turns to a 6 lane freeway, that’s how loud the downpour came over the ridge. We’re in the dugout for 3 min and the field is under water. Ballgame. Thanks for the $70, coach. Honestly, no idea why they tried. I almost felt bad and would’ve been fine if they bagged the 2nd right after gm 1. Wouldn’t have expected to get paid…..he’ll probably not second-guess the radar the rest of the season.

Sorry you had to endure that. It would be the case if the pitch hits the runner. Otherwise, call it, and if it’s S3 for the 3rd out, no run.

Or take the next week off…we’ve all been there friend. Well, maybe not safe-ing foul balls, but we feel ya.

This one is easy to armchair, of course. Hindsight, maybe line up the runner/plate/ball and watch through it as the ball rolls away. We do it with runners tagging. Just don’t lose sight of it behind rolling bodies. 100% obstruction. They got doubly nicked on this one.

Senor Azul, that’s not a relevant cite for the case play. That case play deals with the “gorilla arm” stance in the pre-set position. That’s not this OP.

Modern sports. TV pays a lot of bills. We will certainly never hear talk of shortening commercials. Blasphemy!!!

Umpires, get a stopwatch. Stop with “calling out start times” of 9:02, 7:17, 10:01 bullSH*# battles on the field. I once got charged near the mound because I called time limit and the coach was trying to shove his phone in my face. I told him, sorry, we’re on Verizon time for this one, your clock is slow. Since then, I’ve never had one time related issue. You can even get a fancy stopwatch with a countdown timer. I tell coaches I’m not calling out start times and we’re not going off your SK. When we hit 0:00, the game is done (obv not with extras, bracket games, etc). Feel free to check in any time during game with me. There’s a whole 60 seconds to bitch/fight/argue about if using your digital phones/iWatches/etc. That’s a big difference in the bottom of the 6th to see if we’re going 7.
