Yes, remove it from your pregame. JohnnyCat is right. Intros, lineups (if you’re req), ground rules (hell, this one can go 99% of the time, too), handshake and a “good luck.” That’s all you need. Include any items req by local leagues, associations, etc. But hopefully those are minimal, too.

Angle got a bad rap starting with the CLE/OAK game in which the 1st yr of review had that questionable HR off the green railing in CLE. A (now retired) MLB guy from our local association spoke to us abt replay & explained/described those first replay monitors - which were little more than a standard 17” computer monitor tucked away in some crap storage area past the dugout. I’m not saying talent doesn’t ebb & flow over time, but a lot of Angel’s public perception got a crap start from that play. JMTC.

Please don’t do this. Make your call as U1. In an off-chance I get blocked, am looking at another responsibility, get dirt in my eye, hit by a thrown bat and go down, etc…..if you “don’t know” and then come to me and I can’t necessarily make a call, it looks terrible - we now have 2 umpires with no call. If PU can’t offer you anything, what would you do as U1? Better to make a call, then, if a team disagrees, we can get together and then come to an answer.

I do honestly mean this with respect - this should be your indication as to why an umpire manual hasn’t ever included an approved position to call a game from the dugout, bleachers, press box, etc.

Make sure a ruling on the ball being foul, both hands in the air with a “foul” call. Then an out signal for the batter. Increase volume and assertiveness for non-obvious foul (slight tip that goes to the backstop), maybe a squeeze play is on, late in the game with runners on, etc etc etc.

My situation: What would you recommend for someone to get started in 2024? I was observed at a pretty nice camp in the Great Lakes area and live in Ohio. I’ve got some commitments and family things to take care of this spring, so 2023 wasn’t feasible to get rolling. What would you recommend for training, study, etc. to get ready for 2024? Thanks!

Find something like this, mine is just 1 container - no sections. Very inexpensive @ Walmart and the like. It holds all my indicators, brushes, pens, lineup card holders, extra shoe laces, etc. Nothing gets damaged in the bag.

That’s because most of the thread has been taking stances on 1 umpire v. 2 umpire. We get it, no one likes it. Move on. Hopefully we get back on track - I doubt this person cares or can do anything about it.

Welcome to the forum. I can tell you sound like an intelligent young man, this is a good site to learn from. Dump the guy after the “you blew that call.” He wasn’t talking to his coach. That’s a loser excuse to hope an official takes the bait and lays off. You heard it, and he certainly wasn’t using the correct pronouns to “talk to his own coach/player.” Now, I’m not saying have a quick trigger. But you need to know the 3 Ps - profane, personal, persistent. He went personal. Everyone has their own style of ejection. Use the standard mechanic, be firm, be assertive, and no you don’t have to start the circus with too much on an EJ. But please, bring a little more officiating “umpf” than “you know you can’t still be here after you did that, Coach.” Come on. I think your explanations were good - keep them short, succinct, and don’t try to convince the coach. Tell him what you saw, what the rule is, and move on.
