Holy SH*#. Also, it sounds like you’re on the right track my friend. You already recognize bad umpiring and skill/ability. Keep working hard. Also also: “It's hard when all the "senior" umpires I've been scheduled with don't care about actually being good at what they do ... which has been very obvious with their attitudes and comments”……don’t worry about it. You won’t change those guys. They’ll show their ass enough times and coaches will remember the guys who call R1 only IFF or don’t have the balls to call a 7th inning squeeze play RLI and send R3 back. You will come out on top. Don’t waste your time worrying about others, focus on your game and not who you work with. This seems to be a parent and/or coaching issue. Not to be misconstrued saying a TD can’t/shouldn’t cancel/reschedule. But they’re in charge of their own kid. I spent 10 years in a major capital city rec & parks program running youth travel tournaments. Some w/ ~40 teams, up to ones w/ ~120 teams. I never took away someone’s right to be a parent. Also, I have a nice unequivocal record of never “letting a coach/parent back in.” Got ejected? GTFO. No appeals heard. And we’ll eval if you get to come back for Sunday. Were there many I stood right at a field and witnessed? Yep, sure did. Were there some I said internally, “self, did you just see Bob EJ that guy way too quickly?” Yep, sure did. I didn’t care. I needed my umpires way more than I needed some ****head coach/parent. See you next month at the next event.

On point Matt. I’d like to add if we umpires are having to add things like “but” or “well” to your explanations to coaches, you’re only making it harder on yourself. Case: FPSR. We’re in the gray area of going in standing up. I called it. Coach asked what he did. I replied “force play slide rule violation.” Coach said, “ok, I didn’t see it, just want to get with my player.” If I spent time parsing through the “no slide, even though he did this, should have done that”…..SH*# house. Thank someone for finally bringing it up. I was wondering if we’d get there. Said to Team A: “hey coach, your pitcher is pretty close to balking, got that glove moving, kinda could be something, have him knock it off.” Smart Team B: “hey blue! Why’d you tell that team to knock something off? We’re they violating a rule? Why don’t you call it!?!?!?” We think we’re being sly every time we pull the ‘ole “dust-off-the-plate-and-whisper-to-the-catcher blah blah blah……” Yeah, we’ve all done it. No wonder we often hear, maybe rightly so, “umps didn’t call that last game!!!” I’m prob guilty of it too….but I told myself this year to get better in this realm…..either call the rule or don’t. Wow, good scenario. I can honestly say both letting the steal stand thought and enforcing the “all runners return” penalty are reasonable actions. With that said, can we go to our trusty “apply common sense and fair play” here? Did an inanimate object in the box, with no bearing on a steal, require a penalty enforcement? I’m inclined to say no.
