NFHS 8-2-6 (k): Third-out Baserunning Infraction. If a baserunning infraction is the third out, runs scored by the following runner(s) would not count. With two outs, if the base missed was the first to which the batter or runner was forced to advance, no runs would score. When a runner is legally returning after a fly ball has been caught, he can be put out by being tagged with the ball by a defensive player or merely by the defensive player with the ball touching the base occupied by the runner at the time of the pitch. Saw a WCWS game yesterday and one of the gals from Stanford was wearing some stripped top hat, and after teammate jacked one, they were out at the plate and one of the gals drops a pink cowboy hat….not sure what they were using it for. Props don’t seem to be a problem with the ladies as they can probably handle themselves, and their womanhood isn’t being challenged/dissolved by an opponent. If the women were clearing benches, SH*# talking (some prob happens, but not as bad as the dudes), etc. then the props would be done away in fast pitch or we’d see a huge amt of EJs.

I made it my first HS Regional this spring - 1 round before the all-coveted State tournament (how Ohio lays out its post season). I’d disagree if you say there isn’t good video out there to study….just gotta know where to find it!!!! About 5 years ago I hit the rounds that start using 3-man. As an aside, I was looking to see my alma mater’s conf tournament scores and ran across a live stream by the host university (not my alma mater). They broadcast a static camera from the announcers booth - so it was an absolute perfect view to see all rotations live and at college level game speed. You’ll see these camera angles & broadcasts at the NAIA/Juco level I surmise. Small colleges won’t sink a ton into multiple cameras, production crews, etc. I “trained” myself the first time with 3-man by plopping down on the couch that Saturday and watching 4 9-inning games. The sweet thing now is if you can’t check it out live, schools almost everywhere have it still available -- YouTube pages for the athletics depts. Go check out their archives, it takes a bit of digging and searching, but there’s product out there to see. Find a conference, check the sched to see who hosted, hit up their social media pages. I’m currently circling back to a project I started in ‘19 with 5 conf tournament games and logging all the various relevant plays/rotations/starting positions/etc. I hope to have it chopped up and forwarded on to our assoc. (with proper follow up to be using copyrighted material). Hope to create a good source of educational materials.

I didn’t say I would call it catch and carry. I was assimilating the two scenarios. I’m saying award 2 bases - why would you not? Remember those plays where the mlb outfielder thinks he caught out #3, tosses it into the stands, then realizes it’s only 2. Two base award for putting the ball out of play. My apologies if I didn’t explain what I meant better.

A lodged ball isn’t rewarding the defense. What do you mean? It’d be 2 bases. And if they did it intentionally, I’d play it like intentional catch/carry.

Can you describe a little more about “comes out of the dugout” and “waves him over?” Just trying to get a picture of what we’re dealing with. I can picture 2 steps out, he shouts across (which may not be too big a deal), and it’s a mild back-and-forth. Or, like I had 3 weeks ago with 2 programs about 4 miles apart who HATE each other. I mean they wouldn’t spit on the other if they were on fire. VT was up like 9-0 and got heated about a FPSR no-call. The HT who was getting trounced comes out to me for a lineup sub, and barks across the field, but really saying to me, “what’s he whining about…always has to complain on something!!!” I don’t know if the VT heard HTHC, but as he’s subbing in, I told him, “talk to me, “Chris,” you’re not yelling across the field. Not going there.” So, I guess it depends to what degree Fahrenheit this thing starts to heat up to. Or, are you reading it like it’s two coaches who are ribbing each other and you’ll look a fool for interjecting yourself.

What about this eval: The batter has a right to attempt to hit, with unimpeded action, the pitch. It ceased to be a pitch once it’s caught. I’d say there’s no right to swing at that point, without penalty. Proof: We wouldn’t be talking about this with bases empty.

That’s an “umpire to the dugout” call - which used to be the way to go from the dawn of time until about the mid 2000s. We now umpire to the camera; everybody sees everything, can go back and review everything…chop you up and post it for the world to see. That’s just the way it is now. Your call was correct.
