It's the same in umpiring as it is in every other job or social interaction. Those with the power to make the decision have the final say. Politics is who they are and what they want. It's not to say that people don't advance because of they're advanced abilities... It's just a lot easier and more likely if one is able AND liked. There's not much more of an explanation to it. It bothers me that the answers reflect both pawning off the call on the other. I want every call!!! In all seriousness, PU busts his tail back to the plate. He can read the play as it develops and get a head start back to HP ahead of R1. BU is going to be roughly the same distance away as he is in no man's land between 1B and 2B (possibly closer to 2B if BR is taking 2B on throw to third). Preventive officiating is precisely that, preventive... We can prevent infractions that aren't a part of the actual game at hand. (Plus, you're not denied a base here, it's only a ball added to the count in FED). If a pitcher is on the rubber and does this with runners on, different story. But I have zero issues with catching this off the rubber and replacing the baseball before it becomes an infraction. This is an 'I got you' moment that is avoidable. NFHS already has a helmet rule in place. Why would the league modify it? Team warning for the first offense, eject offender for second offense. Mind you, that rule also only covers when the ball is live. Sounds like some really amazing OOO if you ask me. Just makes the job that much tougher for the rest of us. The definition of a force in the rule book is 'in forced to advance because of the batter becoming a runner.' The batter cannot force himself so the scoring rules add an extra rule that nullifies any run when the batter-runner makes the 3rd out prior to safely reaching 1B. Does there have to be a batted ball? The penalty under 3-3-1(L-Q) only says "...if on offense, the player is ejected and declared out, unless he has already scored." Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

In Alabama, we have trained our coaches to bracket the DH with the player he's batting for. If it's not done, then PU asks and brackets at the plate meeting. No issues here. We are allowed to do that when we get together and conference on other calls too. The original call is mine and mine to change... Now what sort of idiot would that make me if everyone publicly got the additional info and I didn't change it? That would be a game management issue... And honestly, no umpire that actually reads the rules/mechanics to that level would be dumb enough to keep the original 'Ball' call anyway. Other umpires really don't even know how the 'my call, additional info' stuff works anyway. They just go by standard practice and what's seen on TV. Ive got HBP. No way I could reasonably say/justify that the batter intentionally got hit with that pitch. And I am known in my area for bringing hitters back to the plate and/or getting dead ball strikes. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

Quite honestly, I still want to believe it's my call to change as a PU after checking with the BU. He gave me more info to which I change the call with the response, "Then, that's a strike" accompanied with the strike mechanic and the count. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

Of those statements given, I disagree with "safe, tagged her on the base." That sort of goes back to the English lesson earlier on "he made it, but he's out." On basic tag plays, safe is just safe. Descriptions are only needed if something funky occurs like a dropped ball, a close/missed tag, etc. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
