There's a case play that distinguishes between lodged and 'temporarily stuck'. A fielder is allowed to attempt to remove the ball from his glove without penalty. The moment he takes the glove off with ball 'stuck', then it is considered lodged Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

According to Gil's diagram, Beltre gets pretty close to getting in the pitcher's view behind home plate... I know it's not NCAA but the diagram shows him in violation of their rule too (past 3BLX). Why would it not be allowed? Courtesy runners are for the previous pitcher and catcher of record. Same deal with pinch hitting for the catcher and re-entering that F2 when his sub reaches base (so that a courtesy runner can be used.) It's allowed. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

Better to have and not need, than to need and not have. The OP is exactly what we are talking about. Despite the fact that higher levels of baseball require more prior knowledge and game management readiness (or expectation of), it is still better to have the knowledge, even at the youth levels. Sometimes those participants think those games are important than the MLB World Series. It's not changing how you umpire. It's preparation. This should be a part of any pregame. Those that get bogged down with prepping their ejection mechanic or prepping ultimatums in the locker room have missed the point and need be corrected. We are a team and need to be prepared to work together in almost every situation. And a lot of times, we may have to do that without being able to come together. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

I was actually quite surprised to find so many umpires on here that don't care to know the potential importance of a ball game. Knowing the status of the game or the team participants/history is valuable information for managing the game. This isn't to say that you treat a championship game any differently from a regular season game, but you'd be hard pressed to find any higher level umpire that just 'goes and umpires' the game. Case in point, a partner and I this year had a big rivalry series between two JUCOs this past season... Winner of the series won the division and the teams had a history. You don't just show up and umpire. A few potential game issues were recognized early by us because we knew the ramifications of the game and how the teams were. Knowledge is power and having the knowledge of the meaning of a game may allow us to stay ahead of potential issues and actually more effectively manage the game. When Jones pinch runs in the offensive 5th, the DH position is 'killed'. (Smith retains re-entry right as he was a starter by definition). Smith reenters for Jones in the offensive 7th to hit. (Jones retains re-entry right as this is the first time he has left the ballgame and was a starter). Jones reenters in defensive 7th to play CF. (Smith is now done as he no longer has re-entry). This isn't about getting out more often. It's about the various rulesets over-legislating our jobs on the field. If there is a rule that covers it, and an opposing coach chooses to pick that rule to whine about, then we aren't doing our jobs as prescribed. Coaches wanna help us in every other spot. At this point, the umpire should just let it lie. Adults getting into that sort of argument across the field is still none of my business if it doesnt take away from the game continuing. Gotcha. I don't do fast pitch, but play quite a few of the national slowpitch tournaments. And I'm one of the speedsters on those circuits, so I make sure to know the CR rules since I'm usually the one running CF/running once an inning. Have to make sure my spot in order doesn't come up and penalties associated. Can't predict beer league and local rules. Those might as well be a roll of a 187-sided die. What associations do you know that do this for men's slowpitch? Because I know WSL (designated base burglar), NSA (anyone on roster once per inning) and ASA (anyone on roster once per inning) have the corresponding rules for CRs. I don't think I've played an association where the national ruleset was furthest player in lineup or last batted out. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

I mean. Did they completely ignore 5.04(a)(1) and (2)? (1)Each player of the offensive team shall bat in the order that his name appears in his team's batting order. (2) The batting order should be followed through out the game... Part 3 is only included to ensure that the #5 hitter is next when the #4 hitter is the 3rd out of the previous inning. Lineups are given to the umpire at the start of the game for a reason. Don't let blowhards think they're pulling the wool over someone's eyes. In all seriousness, most slowpitch associations have a rule that covers a courtesy runner that is on base when his turn to bat comes up... The turn at bat becomes an out, no effect on runners, and play proceeds with the next hitter in the lineup. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
