Do not instruct a pitcher to pitch when there isn't a batter in the box. Batter stepping out without getting Time, different story. We can either get the delay strike, or the pitch strike... I would not have called this IFF in real-time and for the purpose of the rule, I think it's justifiable. Both runners would be 'halfway' (arbitrary distance honestly) in case the ball is dropped and BR is live. No way the defense should have been able to get a cheap double play with runners 'doing what they should have been doing' (although I do hate it when anyone uses that mentality for rules/umpires). Mechanics-wise: it's ever important to be loud and proud when signaling/verbalizing IFF. Difficult situation all-around when it is judged to not be an IFF in such a gray situation. My comment was just to incite some discussion on that new NCAA interpretation of the dead ball territory rule. FWIW, a fielder throwing their hands up doesn't kill the baseball... Ever... The play/ball is dead when something occurs that makes the play dead. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

The reasoning I would give for not getting it in real time in FED is that the F2 gave access to the plate through his legs. The angle I would get 1BLX may give me a better idea if the F2 is up the line enough to scratch that access idea, but I'm only afforded the camera angle as shown. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

But in all of that reasoning you have forgotten about the runners reaction to whatever the umpires delayed call may be... Sure the appeal to first base maybe unmistakable but the runner may have gotten back in time if the Umpire made the right call at the right time. I understand that. But we still can't rule on an appeal unless it's unmistakeable. That is a pure rule in the rulebook. And given the scenario and how it was written, I would not have an unmistakeable appeal here. How many times in baseball have you seen a player think he's caught a ball when he hasn't (or was ruled he didn't)? Unless there's a wrong call by the umpire that puts a runner in jeopardy, we get one out here as described. But I don't discredit the idea that there may be situations that arise similar to the OP where we get 2 outs. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
