First game on big diamond with 3 man crew. I'm 3B Ump. In D, With an R3, where is the best place to be on an attempted pick off? Should I try to move into fair territory to get a better angle? Start about 5 feet from 3B rather than 10 and stay put? What about if the throw is coming from D2 on an attempted pick off? Stay put or move in? Thanks in advance.

quick mechanics question from a game I did: R2. Fly out to CF. R2 tags properly and reaches 3B. DC is screaming to throw the ball to 2B to "appeal" after the catch. Now if she had left early, I would have called her out. But because she did not leave early, I made no "safe" call until they threw back to F1 and then made an obvious appeal to 2B. Should I have just indicated safe initially? Thanks in advance Wes

Base umping. Rundown between 2B and 3B. I am in working area between 2B and 3B. Runner decides to go back to 2B. He avoids the tag by getting around the fielder with the ball (within 3 feet). He falls and is scrambling back to 2B. I see, from behind the fielder, the fielder tag the runner before he reaches the bag. 1B coach (and crowd on 1B side-for what its worth) ask why he's safe. Apparently he missed the tag on the runner. I was in the right spot and called what looked like a tag out. Did I botch the call? Could/should I have been in a different spot? Thanks in advance.

Should be an easy one for you guys and I think I know the answer but want to confirm: Bases loaded, 2 out. D3K- ball gets away. Run scores before F2 throws or tags B/R out. Run score or not? Is throw to 1B or tag of B/R a force? Thanks in advance.

If ALL runners have advanced one base. So if R1 has rounded 2B almost to 3B, but BR had not yet reached 1B at TOT, R1 should only get third?

Been doing LL for a few years now. Watching several of my son's middle school (60/90) games, I was confused when an overthrow from an infielder went out of play and R1 was awarded home. He was already around 2B when the throw was made. I thought it was clear cut that it's 2 bases from TOP on that, but was told by some friends who do big diamond ball, that at this level, it's umpire's judgement. Does this mean runners are awarded bases based upon where the ump thought they could have made it to had the ball not gone out of play? Thanks in advance!

Rich, I read this as well. But say R1 takes off after ball gets past F2 and he is almost to 2B. Is it still 1 base from time of pitch? What if he had reaches 2B before it rolled out of play?

LL- R1, Pitch gets past F2 and rolls out of play. Does R1 get 2B or 3B? Is it TOP and therefore 2B? Does it matter if R1 took off before ball rolled out of play and therefore 3B? Thanks in advance.

In LL, I thought that this would be "I got nothing" or train wreck if the thrown ball to F3 (for example) took him into the baseline and colliding with BR??

So a high pop up in foul territory in front of 1B, F1 comes to try to get under it (as well as F3), BR stays in base path and F1 (looking up) and BR collide, it's what? Say F3 never got to it and F1 would have had the best chance? INT even though BR never saw where ball was? Sorry...just still unclear.

2 questions. First one's easy and the second I just want to clarify what I am reading (Little League) 1. Pop up 1B line/foul territory. BR in base path and P or F3 collide as fielders are looking in the air at the pop up. Train wreck? 2. (stay with me here): Improper batter reaches 1B. Defense appeals it and proper batter is called out. It says that any advance made by runners due to a hit, BB, etc...is nullified. Does that include the improper batter who has reached 1B? Is he pulled off of 1B? As always, thanks in advance

Even if he's waiting to field a catch, doesnt he have to give the runner a path to reach the base (unless he's being pulled into the path by the throw). I'm thinking of F3 giving the base path even though he is fielding a throw unless pulled into the path by the throw. I would have called OBS. (Little League)
