  1. So I’ve been reading through the Ask the Umpire forum and have a question. This is hypothetical, so I’m curious what different rule sets might say. I understand the award, but my question is how to verbalize it as the umpire. I seem to recall seeing a discussion in a very old threat; here goes: R1, 1 out. Batter hits deep fly ball, R1 off on contact. Ball is caught when runner is well past 2nd. F8 throws ball out of play (for argument sake, let’s say he flips into the stands) I know the NFHS rule that going back and touching 1st at this point won’t negate the possibility of appeal in this situation. Since the runner’s award from 1st would be 3rd base, if I award third base aren’t I tipping the defense that he left early (runner is still past second, let say) Do I award home and if he goes back to first to tag, then change the award to 3rd? Thanks!
  2. So I had a situation yesterday I would like some opinions on. Let me lay out the situation for you. PONY Mustang(9-10yr old) end of season playoff game. R1 on 3B, R2 on 2B. Honestly don't remember how the play went down, but here was where I went into my quandary. R1 comes home, but doesn't touch the plate. Before R1 comes back to touch the plate, R2 comes home, and DOES touch the plate. So I know that if the other team saw that R1 missed the plate, I've got an out. Sure as shooting, the coach comes out, but he says he's protesting that R1 missed the plate. I called time, and when to confer with my partner to ensure I had an out. He agreed with me. When I came back to the coach I told him that he needed to perform an appeal play. SO after the coach explained everything step by step to his players, I call R1 out. IMMEDIATELY the 3B coach comes over and starts arguing that I should have not advised the coach on what he should have done. My quandary is this; Should have I said anything to the coach?
  3. We had this discussion last night at our HS association meeting. The instructor said that if there is a BOO situation, and the offense then initiates a play (such as, prior to any pitch, the improper batter who just reached base steals, with F1 then stepping off and making a play on him), that this does not cancel the defense's right to appeal the BOO. The justification being that this prevents the offense from intentionally forcing the defense to play on them knowing that it will cancel the right of appeal. Now, it clearly states in 8-2 Penalty that offense-initiated plays does not cancel the right for the defense to appeal baserunning infractions - specifically for missed bases, or bases left too soon on a caught fly ball. I see nowhere in the rules that this applies to BOO "appeals." Am I missing something? I see nothing in the BOO rules about offense vs defense initiated plays. I also don't see anything that makes a BOO "appeal" equivalent to a baserunning appeal.
  4. Please check my work. "Rn" and "Fx" are used in place of R1,R2,R3 and Fielder, etc. These are all the differences from OBR in the the FED appeal rule. Appeals 8-2-(1-5), 8-2-6d1, 6-2-2b1,8-4-2q Dead ball appeals are allowed can be Verbal can be made by a coach [*]No appeal necessary Rn taking a running start from behind the base to retouch (automatically out) [*]Appeals after offense initiates a play are allowed [*]An Appeal on the same Rn after Fx errs in appealing is allowed This OBR 7.10 phrase is missing from NFHS [*]Rn May not return past a previous base to correct a baserunning error during a dead ball and shall be called out on proper appeal. "If the defensive team on its first appeal errs, a request for a second appeal on the same runner at the same base shall not be allowed by the umpire." Errors or omissions?
