And if the other umpires are less experienced, he is training a new generation with flawed interpretations, made up rules, and poor mechanics Well, I didn't know when I wrote this that it was an informal association, as you can see that his followup read as such. So yes, I agree that blind are leading the blind. That is why I suggested to him to step up and offer training. The worse they can say is "No". Either way, I'd be looking to see if there are other associations in the area to join. Regrettably, he's a fish swimming upstream against a mighty current.

With all my heart, I beseech the King of Heaven, Our Heavenly Father, through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, that the spirit of cancer would be bound and rebuked in your body. I ask that my brothers join me in agreement that this dispicible attack against your health and spirit would be remanded, and that the cancer would flee; for by the stripes of the Lord Jesus, you are healed! I remind my brothers, and the King of Heaven, that where two are more are standing, that anything they agree as in touching, will be done by our Father in Heaven. I stand in the gap, and ask others to join me, in rebuking this cancer, and ask the healing power of God to flow through you and cleanse you. The Lord bless thee, and keep thee. The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. I pray and ask in Jesus most Holy Name! Shalom Aleichem. Manny Amen.

In a normal association, that's how it would be handled. In this particular youth ball association, there is no rules interpreter. The assigner doesn't know rules or mechanics; he's just in it for the money. Lots of guys in the assoc are as bad as my partner. The only reason I know what I'm doing is because I was trained properly up in Northern California. Wow. Then you're kind of in a no-win situation. Doesn't your group hold any mechanics classes? If you've been properly trained, why not step out and offer to help instruct? Can't hurt to ask. Worst they can say is no. At least you may have an opportunity to correct some of the deficiencies.

On something as flagrant as this, IMHO, it is up to the members of the association to police themselves. I'd bring the entire situation to the attention of the rules interpreter, association president, and also the assigner. I wouldn't work with him anymore, and ask the assigner not to put you together. If he's doing this to you, how many other umpires is he doing it to? The problem needs to be addressed and corrected.

Welcome Aboard Rick. I used to live in Virginia Beach. Parents live in Norfolk. Glad to see you switch over to the dark side...

What exact code of rules are you playing under, so that we may answer accurately?

I'm not Steve, but... From the Wendelstedt Umpire School Rules & Interpretations Manual, pg 167, SS 8.4.3.B (II) - Appeals of Missed Forced Bases: If at the moment a runner misses a base, he was forced to touch it by reason of the batter becoming a runner, it will be a force out upon appeal, even if a following runner is put out during the play or on appeal subsequent to the miss of the base. (End of Wendelstedt) No runs would score because the 3rd out was an appeal of R1 not touching second to which he was forced. The appeal on the BR not touching first being upheld does not negate the force on R1 at second. No run shall score when the BR is the third out at first base or the third out was a force.

There is no correct answer given for OBR/NCAA. For OBR/NCAA, the correct answer should read: The play is dead when the BR fly ball is legally caught. R2 and R1 are awarded 3rd, and 2nd on the balk, and the batter returns to bat, with the count as was before the balk occurred, still no outs. Rule 8.05 PENALTY: The ball is dead, and each runner shall advance one base without liability to be put out, unless the batter reaches first on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, in which case the play proceeds without reference to the balk.

Thank you Wendelstedt Umpire School for your consideration and thanks for all of us who served militarily. Much appreciated.

Wendelstedt's school is not qualified for GI Bill Benefits Jocko. I already went that route. No dice. Law changes when Post 9-11 came in removed the ordinance that allowed umpire schools to qualify. New criteria is in place. VA will not allow the use of Vocational Training either.

What you wrote in red: As an umpire, the act of placing your face mask on the ground is not a professional thing to do. Simply place the face mask under your arm, by your side and rest your arm on it. Umpires do not place their masks on the ground. Please do not take this as if I am saying you are unprofessional. I'm not. I'm simply saying the act of placing the mask on the groud is. It's an easy fix, however, I respect your right to do as you feel is right. I'll let you get away with this one just once. Especially since you are still new to the site and not know me since I have been absent from UE for some time. But this was sarcasm. You will NEVER see me setting my mask down on the ground. I will accept your apology before you make it and will consider you a brother in blue in the future. Again, I wasn't calling you unprofessional. I was talking about the act of placing the mask on the ground. You gave no indication that it was sarcasm, so that's why I said what I said, because I know that there are plenty of umpires out there that do put their mask on the ground, and think nothing of it. I said it for benefit of all, old and new, and it wasn't an attack on you or anyone. There is nothing I tried "to get away with" and I don't see need to apologize since I wasn't saying you were unprofessional, just the act of laying the mask on the ground is, because it is not taught by any professional or collegiate school/clinic, and is very amatuerish. If I can miss your sarcasm, it is possible that someone else could and read that as acceptable mechanics. If that offended you, I don't know what to say.

If Batter's Interference was part of the OP's story, then it would have been dealt with at the time of the first pitch, and/or argued at the time of the first pitch. The question is what were the actions of the manager after the umpire responded to the call to get help on a swing that happened several pitches earlier? Not only is it an improper swing appeal, but by the OP, there was no interference implied or described. This is where, I feel, MidAm is seeing how we each would react, and see who comes closest to the real thing. Don't interject something, that by the OP's thread, didn't occur or happen.

I'll postulate one. It's not third world but also highly improbable. Bases loaded, 1 out. BR hits base hit to the fence and R2 and R3 score while R1 and BR end up on 3B and 2B but BR missed 1B and R1 missed 2B. Defense appeals properly in all three codes, in the following order, BR at 1B, declared out, R1 at 2B declared out. How many runs score. I'm not sure but we might have to specify the code when you answer. NO runs will score. Even though the first appeal was to the BR at 1st, and it was upheld, R1 was still forced to 2nd, and missed, so he is out on appeal of a force out. No runs can score when the 3rd out is either by BR at 1st or on a force out.
-
Politely explain to the manager that the swing was not an attempt to hit a pitch but an unrelated action by the batter, that the count is 2-2, and there is no help to be gotten. Hold firm.

I have to agree with KLAH. You can't judge all police by one. Each bad apple needs to be pulled from the barrel, and then check the others for any possible contamination, but don't judge the whole barrel bad. -

Then just let go of the reigns and let 'em play. Enjoy this thrill ride while you have it. I know you are teaching them good manners, ethics, and solid ball play. That is what a true coach is supposed to be all about. Good job on your behalf! -

I would think, more than likely, that there would be a league conference adjustment in your near future. -

Let the kids play. There is too much interference from nannies and panzies afraid of Lil Johnny or Susie getting their feelings hurt because of a score. Losing is part of life. Kids need to learn from it. Parents need to let them grow up, get the big boy or girl pants on, pull up their boots, and live to fight another day. What doesn't kill them makes them stronger. Though I will admit, going through it isn't always fun. (You are not the nanny I am referring to). Keep doing what you are doing. You are not doing anything wrong. Let the kids play their hearts out. It could mean their futures at a college. We had a Texas football team win by a score of 91-(did they even score), and they tried to pit bullying against the coach. Texans told that sissy parent to take a flyin' leap. Play hard. Play big, or go home. -
I didn't want to quote any rules because of a request made by Jax, so I honored him, but that is the rule that governs this play. well its not fair to always copy and paste rules.. we need to know them... so when on the field it comes out just like I'm reading the book. I don't copy and paste for an answer. I copy and paste because if I show the R&I, folks will not say I'm goofy or my answer is goofy, or both; and it also helps the new guys and experienced to see that it something they may not have known. So, Jax asked me to not give the R&I until there was a chance for folks to answer, and so I humbly obliged his request.
