I have heard a lot of mixed reviews on the point to first for a HBP would be interested to know what is taught in the pro schools
-
I would ask them to find someone else because 4 and 5 games solo would be too much for me before I went behind the mound!

you always want to try to be on the same side of the field as where the play is being made (in this case first base) in the 2 man its not always possible but yes you start working your way through the working area while the fielder is beginning to make the throw but you still want to keep your head on the ball... just make sure you are STOPPED to clearly see the play

Welcome to the site! You will learn a ton of great information here

That's a fair point. I do everything I can to not be the focus of the game and let them enjoy their game. That being said, if something bad happens on the field that you are working, people tend to refer to it as "your" field pretty quickly. I don't know the best way to approach this. Do you guys let it be their field and their game until they prove they can't handle that? I'm just trying to develop the right approach to this. Its simple... do you mow the grass, chalk the lines, and drag the infield? If not, then its not your field... you are there to officiate the game (and in some extreme cases keep the peace), do just that.

Why did you go back to get between them? Once the game is over your job is done. Should have been thinking "Get the hell out of here"

My thoughts exactly. I didn't see the play (in the neighborhood. I saw the HP call that was missed by GD) originally. It's tough to call it a miss by Davis. Technically it is, but not according to the way baseball's played. The runner didn't dispute the call. That was a miss as miss could be. There was a collision but no tag. Never. The collision pushed the glove hand and free hand away. Never touched the runner. It would have taken massive kahoannies to call "safe" with a collision like that, but he was safe. That's not to say that GD doesn't have 'em. This is an OUT. All day. All night. Every time. Period. If F2 has to be a sittong duck for the collision, HE gets the call (as long as he holds onto the ball). End of story. You call that guy safe and you will have a lengthy ejection report to write. And I'm not gonna play rodeo clown when he won't leave. You call him safe on this play, you're on your own. Adding to this... I wouldn't expect the catcher to catch the next pitch, and just let it go past him, if you called the runner safe on a collision

I've seen this with other umpires. What's your reason for doing this? I've been doing this while I work on transitioning from a point to a hammer. The first reason is that when you hammer a swinging strike if it happens to be a drop 3rd it can be confused with you calling it an out instead of when you point there isn't any confusion. The other reason I do it is because I'm just not ready to give up the point yet. You act like it is some huge revelation about hammering on a DK3 and some people mistaking it as calling an out, because NO ONE on this board has ever heard that before

Just another example of today's young umpire. They want the prime games, give "sage" advice, and blast anyone who disagrees with them. They want all of this without paying their dues. HEY! Us reasonable young umpire beg to differ! Don't make @BRUMP and I come after you (after finishing our prime games) to offer sage advice and blast you when we disagree!! Add me to that category I'll help you guys out!

Very good umpire, great person... RIP Wally
