Also the article stated if he still has challenges he must use the challenge or face ejection if he continues to argue and not challenge. If that's true the conversation could go "Bob what's your question? Do you intend to challenge? No, then have a nice day!". May not be so bad.

I had read an article when it first came out that said if a manager is out of challenges he can come out to request clarification/explanation but after that if he continues to argue is subject to ejection. I've looked and can't find that exact article.

Thanks Warren, I had heard of the play but didn't know it had a name. If coaches spent as much time teaching the game as they do in coming up with stuff like this, well we'd have a better played game.

I'm pretty sure I know the "skunk" play, but I'm not familiar with the "broken mirror" term.

That's nothing. Since the catcher remained standing, did not sit, fall, or drop the ball, and returned to the field, the ball is alive and in play. No base award. Rule 5.10(F). 5.10(F) If a fielder after making a catch steps into a bench, and does not fall, the ball is in play, and runners may advance at their peril. OBR I would rule this for the same reason.

Dang man! I've had a few like those and I chew a handful of asprin for a couple of days after. I can live with the bruise but I worry about that throwing off a clot. I do have a question for you, was the bruise on your ankle while wearing the System 7 shins in the photo? I sold my System 7's for the very reason that they did not provide good protection in the ankle area. I was hit twice in college games at the start of the season, same spot, and it fricking hurt. Yes I was wearing those That's what I thought, I use them but took a shot that shouldn't have hurt but did. I just bought a pair of used Douglas' and sent them to Jeff to be reconditioned and they'll be my main one's come HS season.

If they tell me they do or have been an umpire I usually respond with something like "Good, then you won't be coming out to talk about stupid things". Then if they do, I put it back to them by saying I thought you umpired, you should know ... .At that point I rarely hear from them again. I would call that balk. My issue would be what if the other team doesn't need that "courtesy" because they are better coached or if the call came at a much different situation, (R1 vs R3, maybe winning run) I don't want that. I call the balk the coach will fix it and we'll move on. Only if it's a Rec game would I consider it.

I do not verbalize. In the OP situation I would have pointed the strike then given the safe sign for no catch. When he got back and touched the plate I would have called him out also. The only time I had an issue was on smaller kids, I called the strike gave the safe mechanic and stood there with my arms out and the BR and F2 staring at me for what seemed like forever but likely 5 seconds. Then the both dugouts started yelling instructions. That made me think how long would I have stood there before I decided the BR abandoned his efforts to advance.

Agree, here the HS coaches (mostly) understand the restriction is a gift and stop. The downside is they know the restriction is the next step to ejection so sometimes they will gripe/argue/whatever right to the restriction and then stop. They know where the line is and go right to it, I think if that wasn't expected here it would be easier because the coaches would be a little more careful. The travel coaches don't know what restriction means so it does no good, just frustrates me. For travel ball, if it's worthy of a restriction just cut out the middle step and dump him.

I've used the phrase "try and keep them in the game" before. In another thread people are talking about the MLB documentary "The Third Team" and when the umpires are meeting with the managers in the umpire lounge before the game, they say about the players, "we're going to try and keep them in the game". I don't know what Manny means but to me it comes back to what one of my mentors (D1 guy) says. Part of our responsibility is to try and de-escalate a crisis. If I can get a coach to calm down and talk to me I will, he says he piece and stays in the game and if an evaluator is watching I think I look better. That being said if he can't be handled and has to go I will push the BOOM button. My son is 14 and just went thru his first clinic and he's getting ready to start working games, we've role-played different situations so hopefully he's better prepared. All things being equal for his age I would rather he EJ slightly early than slightly late.

A good fielder will skirt the edge of OBS to try and get the out. Did anyone notice later when Ian Kinsler was on first and they threw over, he took a step forward, then to the bag to create contact to get the call or to roll F3?

Great show! I was suprised at how much they verbilize a call like when PU Iassona called out Fielder at the plate. For some reason I just assumed they were less vocal. And yes I know what happens when I assume!

R1 is at risk of being put out reguardless of the fact his is touching 3rd base. This part. Unless both are touching the base, R1 is safe. R3 is entitled to return to 3rd and safely occupy the bag until he touches a following base. In my original post I thought R3 was touching the bag with his hand which would make him the legal occupier (is that a word?) of the base and R1 at risk. R1 then tagged would be out, R3 rolls off and tagged, out. Seeing it on a bigger screen, don't know if R3 was on the base when R1 was tagged. R1 is protected on 3rd as long as R3 is not on the base. With both on the base at the same time R1 is at risk.

+1 I switched to the box stance this year, not because I couldn't see the low strike (I call 'em strikes mostly anyway) but because of getting hit just above the wrist too often. Changing to the box eliminated that and to my surprise I realized I was quicker out of the box (quick being a relative term).
