"Coach, this is your ball/strike warning. Anything further and you will be ejected." Unless this is FED, there's no reason (in my opinion) to take the 'restrict to the bench' step. In fact, I'm not sure it's a rule-supported option outside of FED games but I could be wrong. Ignore him. Acknowledge him. Warn him. then eject him.

I had this exact situation many years ago when I was still doing travel ball. Coaches coming together to sign card and an assistant came up and offered his opinion about how terrible/horrible/embarrassing I was as an official. Apparently 'Go F**k yourself' is NOT an appropriate response!. Who knew?

A curveball that would have been at the TOP of the letters that the catcher didn't catch was called a strike and the batter didn't like it.....can't imagine why....

Who cares what the fans do? Unless they're shooting at each other or actually setting the venue on fire, why would you grab that end of the stick? If they're bothering you (and they should not be able to bother you), it's best to have game management handle them. Understand though, once you acknowledge their presence/behavior, you validate them.....it's best not to.

12U ball and this guy is cursing loudly and mocking the PU? He's done. Quickly. This is not 'real' baseball (in that the testosterone levels are low if non-existent) and your partner was obviously not a 'real' umpire so the 'real' rules of umpire/partner etiquette don't apply. This guy is gone and anyone on the field that argues with me about the ejection is likely also gone. 12 year olds?!?! Seriously?!?!?

When I was asked the 'What's your zone' question, I always tried to answer 'I'm never sure where it'll be, but by the 3rd inning, hopefully we'll all know'. Tongue-in-cheek and necessary for sure, but funny nonetheless.

I agree with tossing the kid, but not with when you tossed him. A 15U kid directs '"Are you [bleeping] kidding me?' at me, he's done.....immediately. No coach worth his bucket will argue either.

Fans abusing you at a scrimmage game? Seriously, don't take that crap. I volunteer my time a lot around my area because there are many teams that need development and not many 'real' umpires that are willing to help. Here's how I've handled this in the past: If the parents/spectators at an exhibition, scrimmage, practice, etc. are misbehaving, I'll have a quick word with the HC of the team that they're there for. I'll let him know that I'm not going to have such behavior at a 'laid back' game and ask him to handle it. If he doesn't or can't, I'll occasionally address the parent(s) directly. I've actually done this twice..... Sir/Maam, I understand that you're excited about the scrimmage game, but I'm just here to help. If you'd like to explain to your kid that his scrimmage was cut short because his parent was abusing the VOLUNTEER umpire and that umpire left rather than take any more abuse, you go right ahead and keep chewing on me. Otherwise, I'd suggest that you sit back and enjoy the remainder of the game. I realize that in ANY 'real' situation, this would be unacceptable and I'm a huge proponent of not interfacing with the fans at all but in the case of a volunteer umpire being abused, screw them....don't take their crap.

Here's a similar one I had a few years ago: Day Two of two-day tournament. Elimination day or as we call it "Crybaby Sunday". I've already seen this team once in the morning when my partner had the dish. HC complained all game about my partner's strike zone. Unfortunately, my partner was somewhat weak and didn't shut it down. I actually stopped the chirping about the strike zone myself late in the game, just so I didn't have to hear it from the bases. Anyway, second game for this team, plate meeting, I've got the dish now. Partner is there (of course). As we're starting the meeting, HC that was chirping for the whole first game says to me (2 feet from my partner) "I'm sure glad you're behind the plate. Maybe you'll call some F**king strikes." Me: You're gone. Him: Blah Blah, you can't, Blah Blah Me: Silence. Staring off into space for a time..... Him (Louder): Blah Blah...... After he was done and gone: Me: Play. Earliest ejection I've had, and one of the most cut-and-dry for sure. Partner never did move to eject......Big pansy.

Coming here to get some feedback will help you learn about the finer points of handling situations as you move through the ranks. But a long story short, anybody that wants to accuse you of cheating should get dumped immediately. Yep and there's lots of ways to do that 'You gotta call that both ways', 'let the kids decide it blue', 'I hope we get that pitch', 'that's a makeup call', etc. etc. All of these comments will get a stern "Knock it off" from me. Anything further from the offender gets escalated quickly. You don't get to call me a cheater and stay in the game. Sorry.
