It will be interesting to see what they start doing with the "phantom tag" at second on a double play. And when there is a catcher / runner collision at home (a la the World Series) and there is no "real" tag... are they going to call the runner safe in both of those situations?

After I signal and verbalize the strike, (but not strike three) I go straight to the safe signal with a verbal "No catch" I would think that might be a bit difficult if you are unsure if it's caught or not. Those low ones right at the catchers feet?

My question for the hammer strike guys... how do you differentiate a hammer strike and a hammer out? If you've got a hammer non swinging 3rd strike that may be in the dirt how will they know if you are signaling an out or a strike?

Let a ball hit some kid in the head! I don’t even throw balls back to the pitcher until HS ball. Too many lawyers. My son-in law and my two grandfathers and 4 of my cousins for instance. DONT DO IT! Huh? Who's throwing balls back to the pitcher?

OBR OK.. here are a few situations I need some feedback on... Who's out? And if it's the batter the runner returns right? And is who's out depend on the number of outs. Sitch #1 - R2 stealing - batter steps out of box and interfers with throw to 3rd Sitch #2 - R2 stealing - batter swings and his momentum causes him to interfer with throw to 3rd Sitch #3 - R3 stealing - pitcher steps off and throws home and batter interfers Sitch #4 - R3 stealing - pitcher doesn't step off and catcher interfers - No outs but what are the penalties on the defense? Thanks!

I'm guessing the R2 made it to 3B easily with no attempt to tag him. If they had tried to throw to 3B after the bad throw and tried to tag him then a tag attempt is an example of play, so then you can't allow the appeal after that. Let's say this did happen. How would you let them know (or would you) that they lost their opportunity to appeal? Just ignore their appeal attempt or go over to the DC and explain what happened.

That's a coaches job. Actually for our association it's not. We feed the machine, call balls and strikes (if they aren't swinging) call safe / out on plays, fair and foul, etc etc. Heck, I even throw them a little infield in between innings while the catcher is getting ready. Like I said, an 1:20 & $45 of very entertaining baseball. Not always the greatest skill level, but they are having a heck of a time. Especially when I get the 'ol "scorpion" pitch going. And there is only one umpire on these games.

So I'm doing 8u pitching machine. It's the easiest (and funnest) 1:20 and $45 you can do. So every inning they send out a kid to stand by the machine and me (I'm feeding the balls) and act as the pitcher. I have a good time with all the kids that come out... Asking them what kind of pitch should I do? (Scorpion is the favorite so far) Where's the play if they get the ball? How many outs? All that good baseball stuff... So I'm asking the "pitcher" how many outs there are and he sticks up one finger and says one. But it wasn't his index finger. It was the middle one. I'm wondering if anyone in the stands saw this and was wondering why an 8 year old was flipping off the umpire. Oh... and in the same game the ball bounces off the catcher and rolls in front of the batter. The batter picks it up, tosses it out in front of him and kicks it back to me. These games are VERY entertaining.

We did have a dead ball so I had to put the ball back in play. It was a late appeal. OBR

R2 R3 went home on a caught fly ball. Defense decided to appeal leaving early. Pitcher steps off and throws to 3rd... but it's a bad throw and rolls to the fence. R2 advances to 3rd. They get the ball an make their appeal. I allowed it as the runner going to 3rd, in my opinion, wasn't a play. He just moved up on a bad throw. Was this correct? Thanks Oh.. and if the pitcher didn't step off and threw from the rubber would that be considered a balk? I thought I read that somewhere it wasn't. I guess that question is for another thread.

Sure you can... but it won't get you very far. Of course that depends on how far away the parking lot is.
