Rec Ball - Bad News Bears level - 10u R1 is off on a hit to right field. As he rounds 2nd, F6 throws a handful of dirt in his face. I don't believe what I just saw. Nah. He didn't really do that did he? Now the batter is coming around first, heading to second and as he rounds 2nd, F6 bends over, grabs a handful of dirt and throws it in HIS face. WHAT?!?!? 3rd Base coach starts to come out on the field and I tell him I've got it. I go and get the kids coach and tell him he's going to have to take him out of the game. Kid has NO CLUE why he's being taken out. I was so discombobulated after seeing that, I didn't even call OBS.

If a ball has been thrown out of play, then we are going to have base award(s) for the runner(s). Why would we make them return to their last base touched? Simply tell them where to go - "You, score! You, third base!" It is then up to them to correct any base running errors or be in jeopardy of being put out on appeal. My point of him touching home after the ball is thrown out of play (when he missed a previous base) is in accordance with 7.10 (b) Approved Ruling (2). If he is between third (which he missed) and home and the ball is thrown into the dugout (for example) and he keeps running to and touches home after the ball entered the dugout, then he cannot legally correct his miss of third. He can physically go back and try, but if the defense knows this rule in detail (which is unlikely) and appeals his miss of third, then you still bang him out. Doh! Yes.. they would be awarded and move up. Thanks. Sorry but I'm not quite understanding the part where you say he can't legally correct his miss of 3rd. If it's not legal then how can he even try. By rule he wouldn't be allowed to. But in order to appeal, the defense still has to wait for the ball to be made live? Thanks

OBR So if I under stand this right, in both situations, the runner who missed the base can go back and retouch even though the ball is dead. (unless in the case of home plate a following runner has also scored.) One question on your point #2. You said if he touches home AFTER the ball goes out of play... As soon as the ball goes out of play, aren't runners, in a manner of speaking, frozen where the are and must return to the last based touched (or missed) I wouldn't think anything could happen after we have a dead ball. 1. BR misses 1st on his way to second but the ball is thrown out of play. Can he retouch while the ball is dead? And after the retouch he goes back to second? 2. R2 misses third and scores. Ball is thrown out of play. Can he retouch 3rd after he "scored"? Other than he can be tagged out, does it matter if the ball is dead or live? I'm assuming no appeal of the missed base can happen while the ball is dead. Thanks!

If it's clear, don't even mention anything. You know what they'll take; it's just a matter of whether you give it to them automatically or after a game of 20 Questions. Well in this case there was a choice to be made... Runners on the corners with 1 out or 2 outs with one run scoring.

It was 10u so I told him he got a choice... Pretty much any Rec ball team will need to be told.

I believe he's supposed to know.

OBR - R2 R2 is stealing 3rd when I have C.I. Ball is hit anyway but it results in an out a 1st. R2 contines on to home safely. Coach gets a choice, right? He can have the out and the run scores or he can have his player on first and R2 would be at ???? Not sure if R2 should be at 3rd or where he was at TOP. Thanks

Yep... sounded like a broken record. "Infield fly - batters out - Infield fly - batters out - Infield fly - batters out" As an aside, you can say this multiple times and after all is said and done, someone invariably says "How come you didn't call Infield fly"

So once he has scored, even if he goes back to 3rd, he can't be put out right? He is no longer considered a runner.

Why did he return? Because it was an IFF and it was dropped and they were 9u. Very entertaining.

IFF situation with bases loaded. Fly ball and infielder drops the ball and all heck breaks loose. All runners start running. R3 runs home and touches but then returns to 3rd. R2 is on 3rd and tries to go back to 2nd but is tagged for the out. My question is this: Since R3 touched home, should he be in the dugout with his run counting?

Thanks all... So it's always called a "time" play? Not a timing? Or are there two types of time / timing plays?

So a timing play would only be in effect if it doesn't have to do with a following runner? For instance, same situation where R1 and R2 score but BR goes to 3rd but misses 2nd and on the appeal he is declared out. THEN the runs count because THAT'S a timing play?

OK.. let me see if I have this straight. Since he was forced to go to third and he missed it, then he is out on the appeal and no run scores since it is force situation. Got it. How about if he missed home, called out on appeal, then would R1's run count? Timing play there? Thanks

2 outs R1 and R2 Double to the outfield. Both runners score but R2 missed 3rd and is called out on appeal after everyone has crossed the plate. Does R1's run count? Timing play? Same sitch but instead of R2 missing 3rd, BR misses 1st and is called out on appeal? Same results? Thanks
