Who decides when these guys are too old to work? I was at the Cardinals game last night and Joe West was at second. He might know what he's supposed to do but he sure looks like he's having a hard time doing it. He waddles around (like it hurts to walk) and when he's has to move quickly... Forget about it. A day or two before when he had the plate he had to rotate to 3rd for a play and he was really late getting there. (Or so I was told anyway)

OBR So we've got an R1 leaving real early as the pitcher is paying him no mind as he takes off for 2nd. The question was asked "when is the runner considered to actually stolen the base?" For instance, if he takes off and reaches second but there is a foul ball on the pitch. When would he not need to return? If he gets there before the release of the ball from the pitcher? Before he starts his windup? Thanks

Unless the HBP would force all runners to advance, then B would stay at bat. That's what I was thinking but it seemed cruel that after getting hit the batter had to stay up there and possibly get plunked again. Oh well... Thanks

OK... now I'm kinda of confused. Well.. probably more than kinda... Balk with R2 and HBP... does the batter go to 1st or does he stay at bat?

Grayhawk is right... there are lots of unstable people out there. The one thing that is keeping me from picking up the mask and coming back to the game, is the wacko nutjobs who insist on open-carrying all over the place. Just recently read a report of some moron with an assault rifle at a LL game in Georgia, taunting the crowd with "I have this, and there's nothing any of you can do about it!" Even the police who were called said they couldn't do a thing about it, not even so much as to ask him to leave. One can never be sure which of those spectators out there are the unstable wacko with the tiny body-parts who overcompensates with his friends Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson. I have a carry permit. I also know that I am 46% more likely to be assaulted if I have it on me. The stats and facts are clear and undistputable. Furthermore, if its in my car, what good is it going to do me there, when the wacko is already in my face? Anyone want to start a pool on when the first official at a youth sporting event takes a round because of some gun-nut parent? You tell such innnnn-teresting stories. Let me guess...you knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy's cousin who saw this 'gun nut' carrying the pseudo-assault rifle (real assault rifles have been banned since 1936, but OOOH - it's painted black, it must be scaaary!) at the LL game. And 46% more likely to be assaulted by the mere carrying? Why, I believe that to be 100% true, 63% of Tuesdays in November. "They've done studies you know, 60% of the time it works every time"

You got THAT right. Started our second game 1/2 hour late. BUT... next game was a mercy rule and got that over 37 minutes early. Se we netted 7 minutes to the good.

Tie game with 3 minutes left in an 1:45 time limit game. 2 out with R3. BR hits one in to the outfield and the "winning" run scores. He makes it to first and the celebration starts.. But wait... there is still time left. Runner who is jumping around with his team mates his tagged out for the 3rd out. New inning starts after the 3rd out is recorded. Visitors score one at the top of the next inning to tie it up. Home team comes to bat and first guy up, first pitch, spanks one over the outfielders head and it rolls all the way to the fence. He's racing around the bases and is coming home for a walk off home run and the celebration starts!!! But wait... he missed home plate! 3rd base coach is yelling for him to touch home plate but too late. Catcher tags him for the out!! 3rd base coach knows he missed it, 1st base coach makes a VERY weak attempt to get a safe call and admits he missed it. Little kids watching by the fence see he missed it. Parents in the stands are FREAKING out. NO! NO! He touched it!! 3rd base coach shakes his head "no" and the visitors retire the next two batters. Tie score so it's an extra inning tie breaker. Visitors get 5 and home team gets 4. It's all over but the crying. They had it won TWICE... Lesson learned (I hope)

Inside pitch and the batter is hit in the hands. Batter started to swing but checks. (I go to BU and he says no he didn't) Coach comes out to say he started his swing so it's a foul ball. I tell him pope... He checked. That's why I asked the BU. Coach then proceeds to give me the "Zen" interpretation of "hands are part of the bat" myth. "The hands and the bat are considered one"

They have several there through out the year. One going on right now that has several top 25 teams, 13u. But boy... there has been quite a few ejections. I'm not doing the tourney but from what I have been told, these teams (and their fans) are really "high maintenance" Not to mention there really aren't real consequences to getting tossed. . They can come back for the next game.

Besides having his hand jammed down his pants, what is just wrong with this? and BTW... that blue car belongs to the ump in the picture.

Completely off topic but I just did a game with your partner last night!! Giovanny!! Talk about small world!! He starts telling me this story and the more he says the more it sounded familiar and then when he got to the part about the after game issue I KNEW it was the story from here! That is funny. What organizations do you work for in STL? I spend all my time down at the Chesterfield complex. (CBSA) Between regular season and Fall ball I get in about 220 games. That keeps me busy enough without having to go out and do tourneys and what not.

when you allow the home team to lollygag, you're giving an unfair advantage to them. Eff that. I'm not their mommy. They want to waste their time, let them. Most of the time when a partner starts to shoo in and out, it leads to unpleasantness. Our job is tough enough when we DON'T go out of way to piss people off. Having said that, I HAVE told a couple teams to pick it up this year, but absent absolute indifference by players AND coaches, I let them do what they do. Of course I'm not doing 16 games on a weekend...... Whoa!! 16 games? And I thought 10 was a lot.
