OBR I've got a runner stealing a balk and a HBP I know the runner gets the base because of the balk but is the batter awarded 1st because of the HBP? Typically it's a "no pitch" and the pitch doesn't count. OBR rules state: PENALTY: The ball is dead, and each runner shall advance one base without liability to be put out, unless the batter reaches first on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, in which case the play proceeds without reference to the balk. So in this case since runner was stealing and batter gets to first due to a HBP do we ignore the balk or is the steal not considered advancing at least one base at the time of the balk? Obviously I'm confused abot this.

And the short stop did a nice job of selling it as well!

10u Rec ball game and I've got the plate and my partner is brand new (4th game ever, 15yo) He's made a couple of calls on the field that were, shall we say, a bit dubious, but hey, he's new and it's 10u rec ball. 3rd out of the inning is one of those calls and HC starts coming out on the field to go after my partner and I jump in there and give him what for. He ends the conversation by asking "Tie base goes to the runner right?" Oh how I wish I would have had a snappy comeback. I said no and he storms off muttering stuff... (to his credit he came over after the next half inning an apologized.) So what snappy comeback would you have given him? After the fact I thought I should have just stared at him with an incredulous look on my face and said "did you just ask me that? Really?"

Personally... I love those kind of games.

And that's what I was thinking after I did it. No one has ever complained about getting "to much" info. I just wanted to make sure that leaving out the verbalization of "safe" was O.K.

This happened to me twice in one game last night and for the life of me I can't figure out why I did it. It just happened automatically. Play at first and F3 was off the bag so I signaled safe and verbalized "off the bag" (and also did the off the bag mechanic) Play at 3rd on a steal and F5 attempts tag but misses and I signal safe and verbalize "missed the tag" Both times I didn't SAY safe but signaled safe and at the same time "explained" why he was safe. Is this bad? A complete no-no? Or no big deal. Thanks

OT but an "elephant balk"? That's when he's bending over at the waist with his arm dangling at his side with the ball in his hand? OBR.. That's a balk? Elephant balk usually refers to a balk everyone in the park will see and know, like kid dropping the ball on the rubber, stepping to first no throw, obvious start/stop, etc. Oh duh! this one is pretty clearly OBS (but I suppose someone will post a play that meets the definition above but isn't OBS for some reason). In the OP, I think you have to be there, but I'm giving strong consideration to OBS again -- especially if F5's actions are more than an immediate attempt to get up and untangle -- further action that impedes the runner is likely to be the OBS call. Nope... all that F5 did was try and get up and get the ball.

Along these same line... F3 misses the throw on a hit to the infield, and as he scrambles to get the ball that has gone to the fence he collides with runner who is attempting to go to 2nd. This WOULD be OBS?

Not a batted ball. Thrown to F5 from F8.

What got me to thinking it might be OBS is the definition: OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner. So in this case the fielder doesn't have possession and is not in the act of fielding and there is certainly some impediment to the runner.

OBR rules but these are little kids and the skill level is pretty low. But I suppose this question would also apply to the higher level guys as well. Play at 3rd, F5 apllies the tag on a slidding runner. F5 drops the ball and falls over and on to runner who has over sliden (is that a word?) 3rd. Now there is a scramble for the ball and to get back to the base. It's a tangle of bodies and arms and legs. Runner is having a hard time getting to the base because of F5 scrambling around trying to get the ball. Eventually F5 gets the ball before runner can get back to the base and I call an out. I start wondering if this maybe could be called OBS. Or do we just have a train wreck as it were. Thanks

Litlle kids game... Catcher must have been told by his coach to "frame" the pitch to get more strikes. Catcher snags one in the dirt and holds it there. Best one of the night comes in almost shoulder high and the catcher reaches up, makes the catch, and holds it up there to "frame" it. I call ball and he is still holding it up. Coach yells out and tells the catcher, "If you are going to frame it, frame it in the strike zone" It was an entertaining evening.
