Any private games or "friendlies" I do go through my assignor/mentor for CR/BRL.  You don't want to pay - fine, I don't need the money.  That being said, I will send word back to my assignor and your reputation will spread like wildfire.  Umpires talk, and it's only a matter of time before we see you again in a game that counts.

A check is NOT cash. A check is a check. Telling us it's a cash game and then presenting us with a check is an unprofessional move. If you are a known client, we will begrudgingly accept your pivot to a check payment with a healthy dose of shade ONE TIME. Going forward, never again and we do keep records.

Softball guy here - I agreed to a tournament a few years back where it was cash at the plate before we start.  One of my games, one of the teams presents me with a check made out to cash.  I begrudgingly agreed to it, did the games and the rest of them.  I went and deposited it on Monday and a few days later got the notice that it bounced, account closed, etc.  I called the assignor who sighed and said it wasn't the first call he received and that he would run it down and take care of it.  I talked to my bank and they reversed the bounced check fee for me as a courtesy for a long-time customer.  The following week I got a check from my assignor (not from the team) which included the bounce fee.  I called him and told him the bank had reversed it and he told me to keep it for my trouble.

The following week when the assignments came out for a similar tournament, the note included, "Cash means cash.  Don't take any personal checks".

As noted by others in this thread, for established teams/leagues/TDs, I will accept both epay (such as venmo) or checks for my work.  When I get called in to do a fill in and am told the teams will pay me at the plate, I emphasize cash.  Haven't really had an issue since that one time, but man it was a pain.

In between innings the HTHC approached me, right in my face screaming that everyone in the ballpark knew he was out of the baseline. I just laughed at him. We were so stuck. Never again.

You'll learn.  Next time, replace the words "I just laughed at him," with "I just ejected him."

Cash game means paid at the plate, in full, for the entire crew, before a pitch is thrown. In cash...no checks, no Venmo, no other apps.

The fee is what is shown in email, text, or assignment system from our assigner, not what you think was said, Coach...

No pay, at the correct amount...no game to start. It's pretty simple.

Huh, I get it, I really do, but it would have never occurred to me to have a problem with venmo (or another reputable payment app). To me, someone of the younger generation, venmo is, for all intents and purposes, cash. In fact, I prefer venmo to cash. But I already have it, and not all might.

That being said, I haven't been paid at the plate in years, and even then, it was never fir something I worked regularly. I kinda thought that paying at the plate had kinda gone the eay of the dinosaur, except for maybe scrimmages.

or refilling their red solo cup

Varies on region; in California, those red Solo cups cause cancer.

I’m shocked that you’re advocating their use, Mudisfun. 🤓

Shocked! 😮

Venmo is preferable amongst all the other electronic methods – including that 🤬 PayPal – but there is a big difference between “I have paid you (via ________ )” versus “I will pay you”.
“Have paid” past tense ≠ “Will pay” future tense.

I get it. They (whoever) want a trackable transaction. Not every umpire conducts themselves with moral & ethical integrity. There are some who will take the cash, do the game, and then that night, b!+ch to their assigner (or some other 3rd party adjacent to the game/event/league) that “I didn’t get paid!”

Venmo is, at least, trackable.

Besides, do I really want cash in my pockets, or in my gear bag during a multi-game spread, while I’m focusing on the game’s proceedings?

@Mudisfun has an idea I definitely will consider, and should implement – a plastic card that has my Venmo QRID on it… alongside my vendor QRIDs for vending ThighPro ( @concertman1971 ), UmpLife, and other favored suppliers.

I did cash games last week for the 1st time in a LOOOONNNG time. Game 1, 3b dugout handed me an envelope of cash, prior to game 2, 1b dugout handed me cash. Loved it. Easy. And my post game spot loves cash tips.......
