johnnyg08 Posted May 6, 2024 Report Posted May 6, 2024 What do you think happened here? Was it as simple as a missed call? I feel like the crew could've conferenced and it would've given them a chance to get this right...or is that not how it's done in AAA baseball? Could they have gone to replay? Quote
grayhawk Posted May 6, 2024 Report Posted May 6, 2024 Had the almost exact thing happen in a game last week. I was PU. U1 called safe and I'm up the line, probably with my eyes as big as dinner plates looking at my partner. He calls time without the coach having to come out to get the crew together. He tells us that he just F*#Ked up and knows the tag happened. I tell him that I 100% have a tag on the chest of the runner before he reached first. We talk about who is going to do what when we break, with U1 and myself going over to talk to the coach of the offense. U1 signals out and the coach didn't even take a step out to talk to us - he knew we got the call right. 5 Quote

No, no OUT OUT OUT" (like when you have a tag and call it too quick then see the ball on the ground). I can understand calling Safe then freezing. Then, having frozen, feeling like too much time elapsed to self correct. Just curious if this is intentional to not self correct with immediate alternate sign, or is just a human moment. Quote
wolfe_man Posted May 6, 2024 Report Posted May 6, 2024 Was that Pawol's crew in the video? If so, that's two* bad looks on this crew in the past couple of weeks. I'm not saying it's her fault or anything like that either, so don't go there, I'm just saying this crew has had two foul-ups in the past couple of weeks. Not a good look for a AAA crew - especially one with extra eyes on it due to having her as part of its crew. *- other issue was her having a swing and the field ump signaling safe at the same time on a batter, resulting in a manager EJ about a week ago. To be fair, neither of the field umpires from this call appear to be the guy that gave the safe signal last week. Quote

I think too much time had passed. Unless you correct it immediately, it's better game management to get the crew together. 2 Quote
Tborze Posted May 6, 2024 Report Posted May 6, 2024 PU was watching the touch (1st BL extended) and U1 was watching the base. Only help was U2. 1 Quote
johnnyg08 Posted May 6, 2024 Author Report Posted May 6, 2024 I looked at this again and I think U1 is out of position which caused him to get straight lined on the play. He was much less than 90 degrees from the origin of the throw. Getting even close to 90 degrees, would've allowed him to get a look a the tag. I think he couldn't see the tag so he had to go w/ what he could see. 1 Quote

To be fair I don’t think the umpire who gave the no swing without being asked was actually a minor league umpire. Pretty sure he was a fill-in. He had the old shirt/ old patch on. Not that this is something the average person is gonna realize or consider but I don’t think that can be held against the crew at all. 1 Quote

After crew consultation the call is overturned and I am wrong… 🙃 and here I thought I was being observant but I was really just refusing to read… 2 Quote
