What took you so long to dump somebody?

I had taken a pretty big step towards the bench while I was getting serenaded, but something in the back of my mind told me to hold off for a sec and see if it kept going. If it were a coach, I would have tossed them the instant the review signal went up. When it’s a kid, the leash extends because I expect the coach to take care of it. In this case, he didn’t take care of it and I might have waited a little too long. Hindsight being 20/20, the singing was worse than the player’s comment and that should have been the time for the ol’ heave-ho.

I was 16 when Taylor Swift was BORN!

“Love Story” was the soundtrack to my kindergarten-1st grade summer… I turn 20 in July… I already feel old.

Whether you work solo or not, and regardless of how SH*#ty your pay is, the underlying fact is unchanged.  It's not the tooth fairy paying your fee.  The people who pay those fees are going to expect some return on value...and most of them will be reasonable about that.

In my earlier days, I umpired a lot of one-man games.  At the pregame meeting, I always told the coaches I would work hard for them, but they have to understand I'm out there by myself and sometimes will not get the best look at a play. Most of them would say, "No problem blue, we understand." And, I would work the games hard and I can never remember a game or team getting out of control.   I think that's primarily because I did hustle at all times, regardless of the score or the ability of the two teams.  As far as the occasional snide comments, my usual response was, "Coach, I'm doing the best I can." That response worked well.

Working solo in a 12U fast pitch game, I had a play at first that I ruled the runner safe on a pulled foot.  DHC gives the whole, "I think she had the bag", so I "appealed" to the FBC who gave me the "safe" sign.  Both coaches had a good laugh and we moved on with life.

IAWE. Ignore, Acknowledge, Warn, Eject.  Sometimes it's warn, then eject.  Sometimes it's just eject.  Depends on the situation and the 3P criteria.  If you can explain to your superiors that you took the necessary steps, you shouldn't have any issues.

In this case, if the bench jockeying was prolonged, give them the stop sign. If they blow through it, that's on them.  Letting it go on for a prolonged amount of time can cause you to lose control of the game. Not to mention, you army the only one who doesn't want to hear it.

While it's not a rule, I've read here and have had it confirmed by others, that the Spanish custom is: if the mask comes off, somebody is going.

Other than that, read "Verbal Judo" to teach you how to have conversations in high-stress situations. It will change your life.

Coach, this is your team warning for unsportsmanlike comments. If it continues, you will be restricted to the dugout for the remainder of the game and the player(s) engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct will be ejected. Further instances, you will be ejected.

Dump the next smartass who makes a comment or directs a rude gesture towards you.

You are solo and have absolutely no reason to take any crap from the bench monkeys.

@The Man in Blue

Obligatory: That needs to be a t-shirt...

Also, thank you for clarifying "Love Story". MacGraw was stunning in that film. Whatever happened to high ponytails, cable-knit turtle necks and go-go boots?

And let's remember people...Love? Means never having to say you're sorry.

I had a different game a week or so back where after a call that I very well might have missed because I was 60-70' away because, ya know, I'm working alone, the third base coach while walking back to his dugout comes up to me and says "I never argue with umpires working alone, but he was safe". Safe to say, I was not thrilled.

misnomer...working for two months? Welcome to the show!!  One of the most difficult parts of being an umpire is game management.  And, that can only come through experience.  As an example, with no criticism toward you, "Safe to say I was not thrilled." More importantly, what did you say?  In that situation, I think most experienced umpires would have shrugged it off with a, "Thanks for the input, Coach." Also, once you have warned a player/manager/coach/team, the next time will be an ejection. Period!  Hall-of-Fame Umpire Nestor Chylak once said, "Be very aware that the other dugout is watching how you handle situations." Don't let the word get out that you can walked all over.
