The lower part? I’m a small frame guy 5’8 180lbs. My hopes is I will not need it. If that is what you are referring to.

No, not the lower piece...Douglas offers lots of customizations both at the time of manufacture and after-market. One of their best options is gap protection between the shoulder pad and the chest protector. I actually took a pitch there earlier this week wearing a Douglas and had I not had the gap protection, I would have absolutely sustained some pain. As such, I felt nothing. When I bought my new Douglas last year, they quoted me $30 for the gap flaps. It's such a good idea to have them I don't know why they don't just come standard...

Anyway, there are lots of Douglas threads here on U-E. They make superb equipment, in my opinion. Their website is a bit 1997-ish so, for proper service to include orders, please contact Mr. Jeff Cook at jeffcook@douglaspads.com or 713-697-9787. He goes by the nickname "Cookie" around the office...

I don't know what their flow is like right now but, once I settled my bill with them last April, they had a new chest protector on my doorstop in 10 days.

You can also have Douglas fo different colors and such for the padding.

I had gotten one of these a few years back. But it turned out it was to small for me. But I had plans to get the gap protection and change the color on the padding while getting it refurbished.

I think I sent in my gray Douglas CP for upgrades (gap flap, t hooks) in February 2020.  I couldn’t believe how fast they turned it around. They had it on the way back to me less than 24 hours after they received it.

I'm STILL sad the one we worked out for me didn't work out. It ended up working out in the end to a good home.

The shoulder piece and chest protector are very close with no gap for my frame. It’s lighter than my West Vest Team Wendy Retro Fit for sure.
