Fielder wearing batting glove on throwing hand - is that legal?

While umpiring Cal Ripken game today, I noticed F9 was wearing a batting glove on his throwing hand.

Can fielders (other than pitcher) legally wear a batting glove on their throwing hand? Is that point covered in any rule set?

I've never came across anything that would say they couldn't. Its odd and it prob makes it harder to throw, but to each his own.

It was a cool New England evening - low 50's. That's my only guess as to why F9 wore that batting glove. But I can't recall ever seeing that in a game before, even ones I've called in colder weather.

Low 50s in early May in New England?       Are you kidding by saying it's "cool"?    Holy macaroni.    My Mom & Dad used to take us to the beach in Maine in August on such days.   Cool?   You should be glad it's only in the 50s.   Let the kid wear his silly glove.

When I was that kid's age, I had to walk to and from school for four miles in three feet of snow in June, uphill both ways. Gloves?!? Pft. Please. We couldn't afford gloves. I had to wrap my hands in squirrels that I'd find along the way if I wanted to stay warm. Yeah, they were ornery and I got my share of scratches, but it was worth it to avoid frostbite. But there was this one particularly nasty winter when it was so cold, even the heartiest creatures migrated south and I was left to my own devices, devoid of any fur-bearing companions. So what did I do? I'll tell you what I did. Nothing. I toughed it out. And I enjoyed it. True, I lost both my hands after they necrotized, but you know what? I re-attached them by stitching them back on with dock rope and a tow strap.

Sometimes you just have to grit your teeth, suck it up and suffer the realities of life. I'd tell that batter's glove-wearing, right field-playing nancy to take that thing off and bury it in a hole so deep it would wash up in Australia after a good rain.

A pitcher is not allowed to wear a golf glove while pitching. Other defensive players may wear a
golf glove on their glove hand but they shall not rub the ball with the golf glove on their hand.

Yeah, wasn't planning to make him take the glove off.

It was just one of those youth games where between calling 12 consecutive balls your mind starts to wander a bit and you think...hey, I've never noticed a fielder wear a batting glove on his throwing hand before...wonder if that's legal...never seen it covered in a rule book...I think after the game I'll ask the guys over at Umpire-Empire what they know...what if this comes up in a meaningful game and the oppo coach starts complaining and something as silly as a batting glove becomes a problem because I never asked...

That's kinda where I'm coming from. And did I mention this happened on a cool New England evening, around 7pm? Low 50's, maybe high 40's with the wind chill. Partly cloudy with a steady 8-10 mph breeze blowing from the southwest.

According to googling, it might be an American Legion rule in some states. If so, it is not binding on a Cal Ripken game. But, regardless of where it is from, 2.10 addresses gloves on the glove hand, but says nothing about gloves on the throwing hand. Does that mean that because 2.10 allows gloves on the glove hand but is silent about the throwing hand, that the latter is illegal? Or does it mean that the issue has never been considered? How do you interpret the rule's silence? Under OBR Rule 8.01(c), "Each umpire has authority to rule on any point not specifically covered in these rules." [Emphasis added.] If your rule set--Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth, LL, Connie Mack--doesn't say anything about gloves on the throwing hand, use CS&FP.

The 2014 PBUC, in section 3.13, has a virtually idntical provision, although using the term "batting gloves." The foreword says, in part, "Words can never be written to cover all situations in our great game and therefore incidents may occur which call for the sound and fair judgment of the Umpire."

“No pitcher shall be allowed to wear a batting glove while pitching. Other defensive players may wear a batting glove on their glove hand, but they shall not rub the ball with the batting glove on their hand.”

It said golf glove for years. Finally got updated.

Had a SS do it this year. I figured I did not have a rule to hang my hat on and his coach let him do it so I left it aline. He made the plays but his team got 10 runned so we left early.
