I don't care if he's somebody's grandfather, and is (otherwise) the most trustworthy member of his local chapter. He's lying to you, or completely mistaken.

That mask is a +POS Super-UltraLight (thus the acronym of SUL). It is a resin composite, and is one of the most enigmatic (and potentially dangerous) masks ever made. The composite nature of it made it light and strong, while the non-metallic nature of it wouldn't corrode and would also inheritly dampen shocks better than titanium, aluminum and magnesium.

In order to equate to the strength of the metals, the bars had to be physically larger, so it made for a very imposing edifice. Its Achilles heel, though, was something called thermal-cyclic fatigue. Heated up and cooled off (rapidly) repetively developed micro-fractures in the material, which one day would result in an impact "imploding" the mask.

One can usually remember how many "good whacks" their metallic mask got. One would be hard pressed to remember how many times they've left their mask in the trunk of their car on days where the temperature is 80°+ by day, but then drops to below freezing overnight.

The pads look like orange duct tape! He said they were top of the line newly designed pads by Team Wendy for the NASA astronauts. NO WAY!!!!!!!

I know dementia is no laughing matter, but we may have discovered an onset case of it. He's either jerkin' your chain, using his sarcastic wit to counter your rolling up in your fancy shmancy new gear, or he's had his own chain jerked clean out by a shyster bullish!t artist who sold him that gear.

And we read all those stories of "African princes" writing email campaigns to US citizens (often seniors) wanting to share their enormous wealth once they gain access to it. We found the baseball equivalent.

NASA doesn't send anyone into space anymore, anyway.
