Darn it! I got sucked into a balk video vortex with the Hamels video. And now you want me to go down thay rabbit hole again.

Us west coast guys have to stick together! We're the only ones up to answer these pivotal questions while all the east coast members are getting their shut eye.

My guess is that F3 was not at the base.  (Who holds R1 with the bases loaded?)

Looks that way: he's playing in with 1 out to defend the squeeze. He's still 8–10 feet from the base when the shot cuts to him.

Come on you veteran guys. Where are you going to see this play mentioned in the MLB official rules?????????

But you guys who got that special book can quote all day what they say about this play from that special book.

That book also use to tell you in the AL how the runner had to run with with a minimum of his 'right foot' on 'foul territory' and his 'left foot' on the 'foul line' the last 1/2 distance to first, whereas the NL said the runner could run with both feet on the line and bring up chalk all day long the last 45 feet.

That special book has been around forever and covers how the MLB, and NL or AL, in the old days want plays handled that are not mentioned in the Official Playing Rules/or OBR comments.

Do not know if this is covered in the BRD.

Don't know if this is covered in other organizations.

Not everyone is privy to that book although I think copies were finally published at some point if you could get a hold of one.

Pretty much nonumpire and maven alluded to what is probably in that book concerning what this play was probably about, without quoting the whole thing for you Stk004.

Once again, do not know the interpretation for all Leagues and levels for handling this exact situation. Let the others weigh in for you.

PS-MiLB can set up special rules League by League, or at least use to in days gone by. Some used, off the dirt (pitcher location), for attempting the hidden ball trick while others used the, on or astride the rubber, which is a rule that guy who passed away and went to the school told me about. Also mentioned using fewer warm up pitches once the weather heated up, unless it was a true pitching change.

What's the balk at the 6:04 mark?

I think he rocks forward to start to come set then steps off really quick.

Not coming set in a continuous motion?

Don't have to come set to disengage or throw to a base

I know. The video doesn't show it but my guess as to what happened is he started to come set, stopped, then stepped off.

I've noticed MLB umpires balk a step off during coming set even when I can't see the slightest stop in coming set as they step off. The failure to come set in a continuous motion is not even a balk by rule but if you are gonna step off, come set first then step off in MLB. They grab that "balk" in a heartbeat. And umps trained by watching MLB also do.

I've noticed that usually the pitcher already balked, then he tries to step off to hide it.

I've seen both in MLB. But I wonder if what we allow in our levels, a pitcher in thr process of coming set and stopping instantly to step and throw to a base or step back and throw to a base, usually 1B, would be balked in MLB at least by Bob, now retired..

I don't see why it would be a balk.

Me neither. Granted, there are some balks where the pitcher tries to save himself by stepping off. But, If you are coming set and decide to step and throw or step off there is a moment of discontinuity. Why some MLB umpires balk this moment, primarily when stepping off, eludes me.

The balk at about 4:00 is for moving the right foot first, toward third. Was the balk for the 3rd to 1st fake? That would not be a balk in Fed, because the 3to1 fake is still legal?

This balk has nothing to do with a 3rd to 1st move (that only becomes an issue when a legal step is towards the base.) Moving the pivot foot first can only be done in a legal disengagement off the back of the rubber.
