He heard the pitch hit something at about the time of the swing...unfortunately, it was the ground, not the bat. Though IR makes viewers wonder how PU could miss this, this is not an easy call. Slowing down timing may help, but an U3K is a play that needs an immediate ruling.

As Rick made mention to above just on sound I would see how Emmel might have thought it hit wood. It did sound a little off. Excellent composure by AJ though. Not how he would have reacted in his earlier days in the game at all.
