First fall league ejection tonight... A relative to my UIC...

Background: I have a UIC that  is a co-worker of mine that invited me to work his fall league this year, he is looking to weed out some bad umps and pull me into their spring league. The second game of the season, at a plate meeting, one of the HC's introduced himself as a relative to the UIC, my reply was simply I hope your not expecting favorable calls. Fast forward to tonight, his team is down 7-2, out of time, and its his last at bat. His leadoff batterwalks, two pitches into the next batter F2 snaps a throw to first. R1 dives back to 1st short of touching, f3 muffs the catch butgains control and tags R1 trying to touch 1B. My partner calls him out. The HTHC starts going nuts on my BU. I call time and tell him to "calmn down now" and I ban him to the dugout for the remainder of the game with the warning of " any more comments and you are ejected!" My actions were met with cheers from the stands. I call his batter out on the next two pitches, out 2. HTHC starts in on me yelling " well it must be going home time!" I eject immediately and threaten to end the game with one out left if he didn't comply with the ejection.  He then tried to follow us after the  game to the changing room, but a league comissioner intercepted. After filling out the EJ report, I contacted the UIC.

All sounds good, but I would leave out the, "any more comments and you are ejected" part. Just warn, if they don't figure it out you will get the same result.

Why did you feel the need to state "I hope you don't expect any favorable calls"  ?

That seems like something that doesn't need to be stated.

 

Something like that can be insulting, especially if he isn't fishing for calls.

If I felt that I could not ignore it I likely would have responded with "Tell him I said hi next time you see him".

Remember that's the one thing about family/relatives, we don't get to choose them. Now if the UIC introduces him 4 times as a relative maybe I .....nah not then either.

 Why did you interject yourself into your partner's discussion ? And why did you have to restrict the coach ?

As was said earlier, the "any more comments" remark should have been left out. Dugout restriction automatically comes with that warning implied, IMO.

Restriction to the bench is a FED provision, unless it is in a local rule someplace. It works sometimes in FED because of the consequences of an EJ, as in this case, it only prolonged the agony and didn't end up preventing an EJ.  Just because a coach says something doesn't mean you have to react to it. I have also found that telling a coach to "calm down" has the opposite effect (like telling your wife she is over reacting).  

 

So, at the plate meeting, you start talking, ask the HTHC to go around the field for ground rules, as if everyone is properly and legally equipped and you are done. You can ask if they have questions if you want, I usually don't do that though. 2 min max.

I believe Richard has previously recommneded Verbal Judo: The Art of Gentle Persuasion as a good source of how to deal with verbal encounters.  Among the points it makes is that no one ever calms down because someone told them to calm down . . .

1. If a coach is laying into my partner I trust them to handle it just as I expect him to let me handle coaches who want to argue with me. I wouldn't have interjected myself into that encounter unless it was going on far too long or getting out of hand. I wasn't there and you were so maybe that was the case.

2. I never threaten a coach with ejection because then you've painted yourself into a corner. I warn them (I've heard enough coach) and if they're too stupid to realize that means they'll be tossed if they don't stop that's on them. I wouldn't tell them to calm down either, I just tell them " that's enough coach" or something of that nature and move on. If they don't want to move on, they get tossed.

3. In the end, sounds like a solid ejection to me; if a coach said the same thing to me in a similar situation after he had already been warned I'd toss him too. I've learned over the years the less said in these situations the better. Give them a short and sweet warning, then if they don't comply eject.
