@Jocko

Been there. Done that. Once or twice. Just never on television. Not even on YouTube. To my knowledge.

Think that's bad. This umpire, who is close to me, gets an out on a 2-2 count pop fly foul. Time is called for some reason. He forgets to clear his notched indicator, and rings up the next batter on the first pitch.

How close is this umpire to me ?...the stupid bastid is in my plate gear (and no, I don't loan out my gear). :blush2:

To say that I wanted to die would be an over-statement. With this bad of baseball, I had already lost the will to live an few innings earlier.

We've all been there. And wanted to crawl under the dish. How many times have you thought, "please hit the next pitch. I have nfi what the count is!"

Was a good mechanic, though! :rock

That's why you shouldn't use an indicator! :fuel:  :smachhead:

I rang up a batter on a 3-0 count my rookie year, so we have all certainly been there.  As to the bolded above - I can relate brotha!

:smachhead: In 52 years of umpiring, :tantrum: I KNOW I have done ALL of these more than once! :notworthy:   Some I have done so many times that now if I do it such as calling the batter out, I just laugh and correct myself.

I rang a guy up on the 1st pitch after a HBP. Forgot to reset after an 0-2. I threw my hard k3 mech. The batter (my F2) steps back and says, "ummm....Fish....that was my first pitch."

"You're absolutely right. Strike 1"

I could've eaten my hat.

Been there before myself. Rang a kid up on strike 2. Batter looks at me and the catcher laughed. Indicator was right on the money but I guess my brain wasn't. Coach comes to me in the half inning and thanked me for the laugh.

At least it wasn't in the HS State Finals....

I don't get it.  You can't remember that it was the first pitch?  You looked at your indicator before the first pitch and thought, "hmm -- must be two stirkes..."

I get not resetting it.  I get forgetting the count after a few pitches and soem other action.  I can see combining those, looking at the (incorrect) inidcator that says something like "0-4" and having to ask about the count, or seeing 0-2 and ringing them up on the next one.

I can't see it happening on the first pitch.

0-2 count, ball in the dirt, I start to ring him with a big "striii..", realize I was completely wrong so I stand up, take my mask off and trying not to laugh say "ball" as plain and calm as possible.

Catcher, batter, and both coaches had a good chuckle on that one.

Ah, the ole stee-ball.  I hate those.  I had a 3-2 count on my indicator last weekend, but something told me that it was off for whatever reason.  Next pitch, "ball".  F2 throws back to F1, batter digs in for the next pitch.  :question1: Next pitch; he hit it about nine miles.

There's nothing better when you rarely forget the count and as you start to sweat bullets, they hit the next pitch, resetting the count for you.

File down the zeros on your indicator. You can get reset without looking at your indicator

I rang up a guy on a 2-2 count on 2 outs in the 2nd inning with a big punch out. The batter and fielders started towards their dug outs before my mistake was caught. Everybody got set for the next pitch after a big chuckle. Then the Baseball Gods spoke and they got me good! Next pitch was a foul ball to my thumb which dislocated it! I said "Oh man" then the catcher ask me if I looked at my thumb which I didn't want to look at it. He started walking out to the pitcher to give me a break but I told him to come back. Next pitch was a swinging strike. Thank God!

The coaches and my partner thought I should've gone to the E.R.. It did look nasty with my thumb knuckle way out of place. I ask my partner if he and I could switch to finish the game, which we did. I pulled my thumb in place will switching gear. I finished the game on the bases with out another mishap. I think I could of blown a call without the coaches complaining.

Yeah.. I screw up now and then!!

Bottom 7, First Round playoff game. Home team down by 1. Rang up the catcher on a 3-1 pitch with 2 outs. Corrected it right there. The catcher ends up walking on next pitch. He comes in to score the game tying run and the next batter drives in the winning run.
