R2, R3 1 out. Fly ball to deep F8 is caught for out #2. R3 tags up and scores. R2 fails to tag up and is out #3 on appeal. Coaches demand a 'rule interpretation' from the TD who happened to be our UIC. I was in the locker room when the request came in and heard the scenario. I hand TD my rule book so he can show the morons why the run scores. He goes to the field with another between games umpire (SM) who is a state playoffs official and a pretty damn good umpire. They SHOW the coach (es) in black and white why this isn't a force. Coach reads the rule for himself and says, "well that's wrong." :jerkit:

This is an instance of a fairly common fallacy known as invincible ignorance, a term I like a lot.

Everyone knows that coaches are the greatest authority on the rules and their application.

Some umpires don't either, although in this case the coach just sounds like an idiot.

 

I would have asked him who forced R2 to advance.
