I really need a new belt since the one I bought like 3 weeks ago is falling apart. I am wanting to get something that won't fall apart and will last me a good long time. I am having a hard time though of choosing a glossy finish or a non glossy. The belt I am looking at is this one http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum4050.php

Which one do you use? Glossy or non glossy? Why?

I prefer the matte finish myself. For some reason the gloss finish looks cheap to me, as though its just plastic.

Besides I couldn't get my shoes to shine as much as a glossy belt, then I'd just look ridiculous. You've gotta match your accessories with your shoes! :)

Yah the belt I have now is matte, I think ill go with a matte finish instead of glossy. But I want to look good, my shoes don't look shinny and glossy. Is the belt I am looking at good? What belt do you have?

theres no reason your shoes should clash with a patent leather belt. That's just lack of training, lack of motivation, or both. :stir:

Personally, I wear the patent. It looks professional, IMO. But, like most other details about our uniforms, the only people that will ever notice your belt are other umpires. So get the one that appeals to YOU.

And ffs, shine your damn shoes!!!!

I don't have dam shoes, because as much as the guy with the most gear wins, I'll never umpire that close to a blocked river.

I do shine my umpire shoes, just not to the glossy finish of those belts.

I'm crazy I guess. My base shoes are shined but not spit-shine or patent gloss, just hairspray gloss, so I wear a black leather belt with them. My plate shoes are leather luster finish so I wear a patent belt with them. The extra stiffness of the patent belt helps give a little better support with ball bags. Both are 1.75 width belts.

Works for me.

I have both the matte and the patent. Boston Leather is a great belt. Just make sure you order it 2 sizes bigger than your waist. They run small for some reason. I have a 34 waist pant and need a 38.

I wear a patent leather belt with the Gerry Davis pants and I prefer the look. However when I wear my Honig's polywools I have to wear a regular leather belt because I can not get my gig line right with the smaller belt loops of the polywools.

@T-Rav - omg I'm SO glad to hear someone else keeps their gig line!!!!! Most of my partners are non-military and often try to tell me I need to center my buckle. I've tried to explain........to no avail

I had a coach tell me the other day, "boy you are a lousy umpire, but your belt is sure shiny"... :fuel:

I think the belt, shoes, pants, hat, mask, etc., register mainly as a total picture, and perhaps only at a subtle level for the coaches, players, and fans.  They see you.  But, the exact details are not relevant to them.  However, try showing up in cutoff jeans.  Then the details stand out!

So, which belt?  I like glossy, because *I* feel I am more professionally dressed.  So, it helps me play my part, correctly.

@JHSump - exactly. Show up in a crisp uniform with your shoes shined and your cap creased, very squared away and you've already won half the battle. The impression is that of a professional umpire. You LOOK like an umpire.

Show up in the exact same clothes, but wrinkled up, dirty shoes, frumpy lookin hat and they start picking apart the details. Then they'll notice EVERYTHING.

It's kind of a way of blending in by standing out. Make sense?

Yes, exactly.

Furthermore, *you* feel more on your game, too.

@JHSump - bingo

Patent belt and shined zigs

Neither is a focal point, only a small part of the big picture

I guaran-damn-tee that not one single coach on God's green earth notices or gives one thought to whether or not an umpire's cap is creased.

I crease my caps because in the eyes of a few of those who decide whether or not I move up, the expectation is that I do so.  I don't have to pack my caps in my bag to travel, so creasing serves no purpose other than to placate the crease police.  :fuel:

@grayhawk - while I agree with the concept of coaches not caring, I have been asked why we crease. By a coach. During a game. He commented that it makes us look 'military'

I gave him a Semper Fi

I don't answer personal questions from coaches. I just bark Ooooo-raaaaah! At them. The get the message and go back to their ratholes. Hahahah

He was hitting on you.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.  :)
