3rd Day in a Row!!

Working SOLO, JR High.

3rd Day in a Row, 3rd Ejection in 5 games. This one was a no-brainer MC play at the plate.

Bases Loaded, 0 outs, ground ball to F5.

F2 in great position on the inside edge of the plate with his right foot leaving the whole plate avl for the runner. R3 decides to just run F2 over taking out his right side from hip on down. Ball gets away, R2 scores also.

I call TIME, R3 out and EJ for MC but I let R2's run score. I now think I messed that up.... Should I have put R2 back on 3?? Didn't have a partner to run it by but neither coach questioned the run. Didn't matter anyways, they lost.

It sounds like it was also INT. Send R2 back.

EJ sounds good to me.   I would have put the second runner back on third but it's a htbt.

I believe it would have been proper to put R2 back at 3B.

MC is interference, and is an immediate dead ball.

 

So the ball should have been dead as soon as the contact occurred, R2 never would have scored. He's sent back to 2nd (TOP).

 

Live and learn.

I now see bases are loaded. He is sent back to 3rd, because the batter-runner can't disappear.

If you feel a double play was possible, then you could bang the BR too.  Then you would put R2 back at second and R1 back at first (and OC in the parking lot, most likely).

UmpJM answered the part for FPSR.  In other cases, the only time you are getting the runner closest to home plate would be:

 

1.  BR interferes and there was a possible DP.

2.  Another runner interferes with a possible DP, and the umpire is unsure of who the "other runner involved" would have been.

Not always. I'll give 2 examples:

 

1. R1/R2, 3-2 count, runners go on the pitch. Batter singles, F4 clotheslines R1 as he approaches 2B (there's a case play like this).
2. Bases empty, ground ball to infield, BR thrown out at 1B where he trucks F3.

To be fair my 30 years only represented ~300 games of umpiring between ejections.  KLAH316 and I will be working together at some point and I'm sure we'll keep in mind our assigners' words that baseball here in AZ is a business and that the coaches, kids and parents are our, (and his), clients.  As a coach for a long time I saw how much things had changed for umpires since I was a kid umpiring 30 years ago.  However KLAH316's EJ here highlights one area where things have moved toward more ejections.  If he didn't run R3 after contact like this both sides and the site supervisor would have wanted him replaced.  The safety issue involved trumps any desire to keep a kid in the game.
